SOUTH Korean airports are to start screening passengers with full body
scanners, the government said today, despite complaints that they
violate privacy.
The devices will be used at international airports in Incheon, Gimpo,
Gimhae and Jeju from October 1 after a 30-day trial, the transport
ministry said.
The National Human Rights Commission has urged the ministry to dump the
machines, installed in July, because they breach passengers' privacy by
creating detailed 3D images of their figures.
But the ministry has insisted the scanners are an effective way of
preventing terrorism and will only be used on passengers considered a
possible security threat, while others can opt to be scanned manually
by airport staff.
The machines have fuelled controversy around the world, with several
European countries and the United States introducing them.
