A large, fast-moving bushfire is heading for townships in Victoria's East Gippsland region.

The 1500ha fire is burning out of control near Tostaree, 6km southeast of Nowa Nowa and east of Lakes Entrance.

"It's a fairly large, fast-moving fire which is expected to impact townships within the next two hours," Country Fire Authority spokesman Hugo Zoller said about 6.30pm (AEDT).

He said five homes were currently being actively defended.

This fire is expected to affect Jarrahmond, Newmerella, Waygara, Bete Bolong North, Corringle, Simpsons Creek, Wombat Creek, Bete Bolong and Tostaree, the CFA said.

The fire had reached the coast although Mr Zoller said it may continue to spread in other directions, and was causing spot fires about 4km ahead.

The Princes Highway is closed between Nowa Nowa and Newmerella and the Buchan-Orbost Road is also closed.

The bushfire was one of four major fires burning in Victoria on a day when Melbourne's temperature reached 40 degrees.

At Inverloch, 150km southeast of Melbourne, a blaze that began at a pine plantation spread to grassland but was later contained.

Another fire, at nearby McLoughlins Beach, burned 800ha before it subsided after a firebreak was built.

That fire was being controlled, Mr Zoller said.

And a fire at Licola-Basin Flat, about 250km east of Melbourne, has been contained.
