More than 1200 firefighters on Tuesday were battling 16 wildfires in
heat-stricken Portugal, emergency services said.
Most of the fires raged in the north of the country. The largest of
them, however, was ravaging bushland in the southern region of Setubal,
where nearly 300 people were battling the flames.
Plans to evacuate the Setubal tourist village of Herdade do Montalvo
were cancelled after the wind changed direction.
In the northern region of Guarda, a fire erupted in an area where
flames had already destroyed nearly 30,000 acres of bush, forest and
farmland in 2009.
Another blaze that had threatened houses in the central Portuguese
village of Parada de Gonta was expected to soon be under control, media
reported overnight.
Most parts of Portugal were on high fire alert amid temperatures of
about 40 degrees Celsius.
