AL-QAEDA'S media arm has released a posthumous audio message from
Osama bin Laden in which he speaks of the wave of Arab protests
sweeping the Middle East and North Africa in recent months.
The As-Sahab Foundation for Islamic Media Publication released
the audio speech which is included in a 12-minute, 37-second clip
posted on jihadist forums on May 18, 2011, "addressing Muslims in
regard to the revolutions sweeping the Middle East and North
Africa", AFP reported, citing SITE Intelligence.
In the clip, a photograph of bin Laden - with a partially gray
beard and wearing head dress - is displayed while he speaks in
Arabic, FOX News Channel reported, adding that al Qaeda had been
in possession of the audio for weeks.
The Washington DC-based Middle East Media Research Institute
(MEMRI) said that bin Laden was speaking about the Arab
revolutions and talked about Tunisia and Egypt but did not mention
Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak being ousted.
"The sun of the revolution has risen from the Maghreb (the Arab
west). The light of the revolution came from Tunisia. It has given
the nation tranquility and made the faces of the people happy,"
bin Laden said, according to a Reuters translation.
"Tunisia was the first but swiftly the knights of Egypt have taken
a spark from the free people of Tunisia to Tahrir Square. It has
made the rulers worried," the late al Qaeda leader said.
A covert US Navy SEAL team killed bin Laden on May 2 at his
Pakistan compound in Abbotabad.
The general command of al Qaeda confirmed bin Laden's death in a
statement dated May 3, released on jihadist forums May 6, SITE
said.
SITE said it would soon publish a full translation of the message,
AFP reported.
"In that statement, the group indicated that bin Laden had
recorded an audio one week prior to his death, addressing the
revolutions and offering advice and guidance," the US monitoring
group said.
