Great Earthquakes In Diverse Places
Earthquake rattles south-central Nebraska
OMAHA, Neb. (Reuters) - An earthquake rumbled across south-central
Nebraska on Sunday, rattling rural residences but causing no
significant damage, according to local authorities.
The quake was recorded as 3.0 magnitude, according to the United States
Geological Survey, and was felt across at least three Nebraska counties
- mostly farming communities - when it struck around 3 p.m. local time
on Sunday.
"I've had numerous reports of windows rattling, things shaking, but no
real damage. It lasted just for a short time," said Brian Woldt,
spokesman for Dawson County Emergency Management in Nebraska.
Earthquake activity is rare in the Midwest, though earlier this year a
3.8 magnitude quake struck northern Illinois and parts of surrounding
states In the winter of 1811-12, the New Madrid fault zone in
southeastern Missouri produced three of the strongest earthquakes ever
to strike the continental United States.
