FLASH flooding has inundated the Christian music festival
Easterfest at Toowoomba - a town west of Brisbane that was ravaged
in the January floods.
About 30,000 people attend the annual festival but the town was
subjected to more danger and distress when the East Creek burst
its banks about 7pm (AEST) today.
One of the large circus tents collapsed but no one is believed to
have been injured, Toowoomba resident and former state MP Peter
Pyke said.
"It's a bit chaotic at the moment but no one has been hurt," Mr
Pyke said.
Another festival attendee estimated up to 40cm of water has
inundated parts of Queens Park, which is adjacent to the creek and
where the festival is held.
Evacuations are also underway with 1000 people camping in the park
possibly affected, Mr Pyke said.
He said heavy rains had descended on Toowoomba about two hours
before the flooding began and more rain is expected.
The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a severe thunderstorm
warning at 8.30pm on Saturday for Toowoomba and the western
Lockyer Valley region.
"These thunderstorms are slow moving," the BoM website states.
Flash flooding on January 10 ravaged the town's CBD, resulting in
fatalities.
Blake Rice, 10, was saved by a passer-by when a wall of water
pummelled the car he and his family were in but his brother
Jordan, 13, and mum Donna Rice died.
International and Australian artists were scheduled to perform at
the festival, which attracts people from all over Queensland and
interstate.
