At midnight, bankrupt Mexicana airline to stop operating
Mexico's biggest airline, Mexicana, is out of money and will stop all
of its operations at midnight, the country's transportation chief has
announced. The carrier filed for bankruptcy protection earlier this
month and is trying to restructure its business.
The airline blamed its financial troubles on last year's swine flu
outbreak, which scared away travelers for months; the global economic
slowdown; high jet fuel prices; and labor costs.
Mexicana flies to more than 65 national and international destinations,
including the United States, Canada, Central America, South America and
Europe.
