US: Rampaging gunman shoots several people dead in Raleigh North Carolina

Raleigh, N.C. — Raleigh police are searching for a gunman who shot and killed a woman at Cameron Village on Monday morning. Police responded to another possible shooting several hours later near Oberlin and Wade avenues. They would not say if the two shootings were related.

Police released a picture of a possible suspect in the Cameron Village shooting, who appears to be in his early 40s. Police said he might be wearing khaki pants and a dark-colored shirt and is about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs 220 pounds. His name was not released.

The shooting happened about 9:30 a.m. in the 400 block of Daniels Street. The victim's name was not released. Her body lay in the parking lot, surrounded by police tape.

John Floyd was having breakfast outside when he heard the shooting.

"Suddenly, I heard like six or seven what I thought were shots, and I thought, ‘Oh, must be construction noise,’" he said.

Police say the gunman then ran past Pier One and Ann Taylor stores. Angel Sams, who lives in the area, said she may have seen the man.

"I was walking the dog, and I noticed a guy. He just looked awkward. He was half running, half walking down the street, and he was wearing khaki shorts, a blue shirt," Sams said. "He looked like he was in a hurry, but it was weird. And then, probably 5, 10 minutes later, one of our neighbors was in Cameron Village when the shooting happened and told us about it and told us what he was wearing. It was the exact description of this guy."

A Cameron Village manager said there are no security cameras in the area. Fourteen Raleigh schools were temporarily locked down as a precaution as police search for the shooter. The lockdowns were lifted by 2:15 p.m.

Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue said in a statement that officers would be visible in areas surrounding the four schools near Cameron Village when students are released for the day.

"The increased presence relates to both follow-up work taking place after this morning's shooting incident and to being available while parents and students are leaving for home," Sughrue said. "There have been no indications of any links between the incidents and schools."

North Carolina State University was not locked down, school officials said, because police "determined (the shooter) was not a threat to campus." However, Wolfline bus service to Cameron Village has been canceled temporarily.
