Natural Resources Canada reports that a 3.3 magnitude earthquake occurred at 2:05 a.m. this morning, 17 kilometres southeast of Victoria, between Juan de Fuca and Haro straits.

It was at a depth of 43 kilometres and reports were that it was lightly felt in the Victoria area. No damage was reported nor was it expected from an earthquake of this size.

Readers from Sidney to Colwood report feeling the quake to varying degrees.

Diane Bassingthwaite felt it in her fourth floor Saanich apartment. Nothing was damaged but it did make Bassingthwaite think it was time to invest in a cache of earthquake supplies.

In Sidney, Barbara and Peter Marshall heard what sounded “like a train roaring by the house,” said Barbara.

“It was like a freight train in front of my door or a cement mixer.”

The couple retired to Sidney from Fort McMurray two years ago and are well-prepared for an earthquake.

“We have so much bottled water, we could supply our whole cul-de-sac,” said Barbara.

The couple heard so much about earthquakes before moving here, that sorting out their earthquake preparedness-kit was one of the first things they did.

“Now I can say I’ve experienced an earthquake,” Barbara said. “I thought it would be frightening but it wasn’t.”
