A strong earthquake rattled the island of Simeulue off the coast of
Indonesia on Thursday, seismologists said, but there was no tsunami
alert and no immediate reports of damage.
The US Geological Survey said the 5.9-magnitude quake struck at 2129 GMT
around 310 km (190 miles) southwest of the town of Medan on Sumatra.
It struck at a depth of 35 kilometres.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of
continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
