Wild Australian bushfires claims five homes*

AS many as five homes were destroyed in an East Coast bushfire which was
still burning out of control last night.

The Mercury reports residents of Dolphin Sands, near Swansea, were
evacuated and in emergency accommodation overnight as fire crews battled
to save the seaside settlement.

A police roadblock was keeping residents away from the fire scene
because authorities feared a change in wind direction overnight could
claim more property.

At least one home was reduced to ashes and locals reported as many as
four more were destroyed.

However, confirmation of property loss will not be possible until a
thorough investigation of the fire scene today.

Several sheds were also destroyed and at least one car.

The blaze started about midday, fuelled by scorching 32C heat and winds
of more than 100km/h.

Last night a southerly change pushed flames north, threatening more
property.
