ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Dozens of blazes continue to burn throughout
Alaska Saturday as fire teams fight to contain the bigger forest
fires from damaging property.
The Alaska Interagency Coordination Center reported 46 active
fires Saturday morning.
The AIC reports that a 34,000-acre fire 15 miles northwest of
Fairbanks is 8 percent contained. Winds spread the fire toward the
Goodpaster River, where there are homes and cabins. Firefighters
from Oregon took command Saturday.
Another fire northwest of Fairbanks, in Hastings, grew to more
than 7,000 acres. The fire was fueled by strong winds, and grew
toward Washington Creek west of Elliott Highway. Firefighters are
being assisted by airplanes. .
