Hi,

I am currently creating a DAIA-Server for all our libraries and finally
have to deal with digital publications. By purpose DAIA does not include
the concept of a publication type, so there is no difference between
physical and digital publications. DAIA is not about what a document is
but what you can do with it. Up to now there are four services what you
can do with (a copy of) a publication:

* loan
* presentation
* interloan
* openaccess

For digital publications which are freely availabe on the web, I use
(in DAIA/XML syntax):

<available service="openaccess"/>

this *may* imply

<available service="loan"/>
<available service="presentation"/>

but I'd better not make DAIA clients rely on the existence of the
latter. What other kind of availabilities exist for digital publications
in libraries? I know that public libraries allow lending ebooks via
OverDrive or Onleihe. This would simply be:

<available service="loan"/>
<unavailable service="openaccess"/>

and there are digital publications that are licensed only, for instance
Springer eBooks. Does this imply lending? I know that foreign users of
some German University libraries can lend physical books but do not get
access to licensed ebooks because the license is for members of the
University only. At least you should get access in the library:

<available service="presentation"/>

Do we need another service type for licensed digital publications? Maybe
an extension of the "presentation" type. From a users point of view it
would be interesting to know whether you can download a publication from
home or from your own device (service="remote"?), but our library
systems do not offer this information - for instance some ebooks can be
accessed if the university offers Shibboleth for authentification but I
see no way to connect this with existing library metadata. Have you
thought about expressing availability of digital publications from
libraries?
