Bill: B used Sikaflex 295. They have changed to another product.

We rebedded last week our

cabin top side light and stayed with Sikaflex. No need to possibly introduce a compatibility issue.

Defender sell white and black. Be careful on the product date code. This stuff has a shelf life of 1 year.

Bill: I tried to have no residue left, but other than that; wiped the area with acetone.

Bill,

Last time I was installing my Raymarine transducers into the hull, I used Sikaflex. A shipwright who saw me doing the work commented that “unless it is a two pack primer, Sikaflex will stick best to ‘raw’ fibreglass (meticulously cleaned with acetone first”). I had already used ‘Primocon’ (a single pack underwater primer) on the glass inside the cut-out and decided to leave it at that. Two years later, no leaks or problems, although I acknowledge that theoretically speaking the guy was probably right.

Hi Bob,

FYI

I contacted Jamestown and Sika.  Sika wasn'r sure what product and they gave me a phone number for another rep, in the meantime   Jamestown just e-mailed me the following instructions: The Sika Flex 296 is the adhesive recommended then use 295UV as a filler to product the joint from UV. Also you will need the Akivator and 206 primer.

Thanks for your help.

Hello,

Whenever we open the lid which gives access to the area where we find the
water heater, water pumps, etc., in our Oceanis 40, we feel a smell that we
believe to be connected to the black water tank. We tried to follow all the
pipes from the toilet, tank and discharge, and everything seems tightly
closed. Any clues about this problem?

Thanks in advance, Luis

Flush the water tanks often and keep the water tanks full of water  with a name like Luis.....   you are Spanish or Mexican..... So high temperature and water tanks can cause bacteria  especially if you don't empty the tanks and refill often.......   perhaps water purification tables might help....   But drink bottled water if you have this  problem or boil it. I don't think the black water would be linked but ........ if you have a shower or toilet leak it could end up in the bilge ? also do you clean  all the pump filters out including the bilge pump filter? One other problem is check your leisure batteries does it smell of rotten eggs if so perhaps one of your batteries is faulty and gassing and needs replacing or both batteries thats about it ! nothing else unless you have rats on board or mice or .....  bad food  everything smell wise ends up in that area. Also when you leave the boat flush the toilets with fresh water from the shower it smell less and stains less than seawater.  fridge always leave the lid open when away from the boat and clean before leaving. Gas bottle have you replaced the rubber gas pipe hoses if they are old or cracked gas in the bilge is a big no no ! how to blow a boat up ! Always turn the gas off and disconnect at the bottle at night....  anything else is a smelly teenager ! Dangerous things,  best left at home, if related ........ ...---....    Nigel

I lost your original email, but for what it is worth I had a bad smell and color from water that came out of my hot water heater.
Turns out that I needed to replace the sacrificial anode in the hot water heater.

Hello All,

Upon launching this weekend, Im getting a “No Fix” message on all Raymarine Instruments including the Chartplotter.

Can anyone steer me to a quick diagnosis?

Does the GPS unit fail at times?

Thx

I would guess it is either a bad connection from your GPS antenna or the antenna itself.

James,

For some reason your GPS is not reducing the satellite signal to a position and communicating that over your network.

It could be as simple as a loose Seatalk cable connecting the GPS onto the network, or a failure of the GPS, or something obscuring the GPS antenna.

Start with the simple and proceed to the more obscure.

If you have a raystar 125 take a look at the light on top, green means the gps has a fix, amber it is looking, red it is not working. If it is green it is a wiring issue.

The gps status screen on the plotter will tell you a bit.

If you are using sea talk check the wires. Should have 12+ volts on the red to screen.

If you have an older Ray star 120 gps they give lots of trouble as they get older. Replace it with a 125.

remember, the 120-125 etc are not antennas, but complete gps receivers.  they send lat/lon/time info to the SeaTalk network (or NMEA).

Hi Capt Guy,

Im not on the boat now…All I know is that my Chartplotter is RC 520 plus.

Are there different GPS receivers for this?

James,

What GPS receiver do you have connected to your plotter (e.g., RS120, RS125)? Some of the older Raymarine GPS receivers (like the 120) had software issues that could cause them to hang, and provide a "no fix" indication under some circumstances (particularly at the beginning of the season).

So if you have a 120, it could be more than just a lose wire . . . but it is a "known problem" with some work arounds.

Otherwise, Bill's suggestion is the right way to go

the 120 and 125 are usually used with 520... the 125 has a small LED on the top, 120 nothing on top... as has been stated, 120 was buggy and in fact, for a while, Ray was replacing at NC.

You need to ascertain which unit and check the led if 125 green=OK, yellow =searching  and red =problem.

125's are on ebay for couple hundred.

need more info to help further.

Thanks Guy,

So my course of action would be to first, check the connection to the back of the RC 520. If its good, I assume the GPS is bad, and I should replace it with the 125.

I gather the chart plotter can take both the 120 and 125?

suggest you power cycle the head unit and then check the status lights

Was easier said than done on mine as it was mounted on the gimballed radar mount 10ft above the cockpit and IMPOSSIBLE to see in daylight

FWIW, if it is a 120, there are two "no fix" issues that I'm aware of.

The first was a buffer overflow problem that occurred if the unit was constantly powered up (some installers wired them this way). I seem to recall that this was a consistent problem with most of the 120s -- but it wouldn't be the problem you're seeing when you first power up for the season.

The second was a problem with the way the unit attempts to find satellites when it starts up, see the text of an old Raymarine technical bulletin below:

Technical Update: 077

A potential problem with the software for the Raystar 120 GPS Receiver has been
identified. The fault will not effect all units and is entirely dependent on where the
RS120 is powered up after factory verification.

Fault
Before the RS120 GPS antennas leave the factory all units are tested to confirm that
they acquire a fix. In order to reduce the time to first fix (TTFF) on future powering
up, the antenna stores the positions of the satellites which it used to acquire its last
known fix. When the antenna is again powered up, the unit enters a “Warm Start”
mode whereby it searches for the satellites which it has stored in its memory. If the
antenna sees enough of these satellites, it will acquire a fix without a problem.
If the antenna sees none of the original satellites, then the unit will enter a “Cold start”
mode and will take a little longer to acquire its first fix. In the case of future powering
up for this antenna it will “warm start” from its present location.
If however on initial power up the unit sees a couple of the satellites which it has
stored in its memory but not enough to acquire an accurate fix, then the unit will
“Hang” indefinitely waiting for the other satellites to come in to view.

Solution
If the SeaTalk RS120 (E32025) is connected to a product including a C-Map chartplotter
then it is possible to perform a reset on the antenna via the GPS set up page.
If the RS120 NMEA version (E32026) is used then it is possible to perform a reset on
the antenna provided that the display unit supports this reset function.
NMEA antennas which are not connected to displays which support the reset over
NMEA e.g., RC425, can be reset by doing the following:
1. Cover the installed antenna with a metallic object or turn the antenna upside down
to prevent any chance of seeing a satellite.
2. Power up the antenna via the display and leave switched on for approximately 10
minutes.
3. After the 10-minute period allow the unit to acquire a fix in the normal way.
The new version of SW, 1.33, now in production has been modified such that if a unit
does not get a fix, then the unit will cold start after approximately five minutes.

If you require any further assistance please contact Raymarine’s technical support

If you have a 120 there is an internal battery (common button type) that fails. My original one lasted about 8 years. The battery is soldered to the board and can be replaced. Open up the unit, test the battery, if bad, use a dremel to cut the tabs on the battery, order a new battery with tabs (less than $10), solder the new battery to the remaining part of the old tabs, reassemble and your good to go. Or purchase a new 125, but I suspect that it also has an internal battery that will have to be replaced eventually.
