Hi Folks i thought i should post this her as well

http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f19/problems-in-paradise-81809.html

We had our 12 foot AB RIB with 15 HP Mercury outboard stolen the other day at around 03:00 - (we were woken up by something) while at anchor in Grand Case St Martin. Then we heard on the Cruiser Net Ch 14 that another one was stolen the day before from Grand Case. We had just crossed over from the VI's so had not listened to the cruiser net and taken the precaution of lifted our RIB out of the water. Also heard post our RIB/Outboard being stolen from Mike at Shrimpys Laundry (The St Martin Oracle and Net Controller) that there were 30 stolen in the last month. He lost three (he does a bit of buying and selling) two of his RIB's were recovered but no engines and five went missing from Port Royal Marina........SO BE CAREFUL. Chaining and padlocking them up seems to be the minimum BUT that did not stop ours or the ones in Port Royal Marina from being stolen - lifting out of the water and locking up seems to be now required IF you want to keep your Dinghy and Outboard in St Martin.

kindest regards

David

sorry to hear about your loss of property David.

the sad part is that this sort of thing is always bad news for the local economy. word will spread quickly and the rest of the folks on the island will pay the price for a handful of meat head's.

I haven't been to the Caribbean on charter in a number of years, but when we were going regularly, the charter companies would make us aware of any potential problems such as this. I will assume they still do. if something like this was going on at one location, they would simply request that we not stop there to avoid the potential for trouble.

it sounds like time for cruisers to stay away from St Martin for a while. then maybe the local sheriff can get things in order for a less expensive return.
