Pacifica bottom paint

On the Interlux website it says 2-3 coats for Pacifica bottom paint

Surely they mean this for new applications, right ?

Not for an annual season application

it's not about the color it's about the chemicals, it depends on the sailing area on how much chemical action is going on, how often it is cleaned and  how much is used up...if you are recoating, a good pressure washing should remove almost all of the previous ablative coating... essentially it would almost be a new application,  

 

there is a time line in the effectiveness of the paint from the manufacturer based on the amount of chemicals applied,  using fewer coats may reduce that time line of effectiveness of the chemicals... it would take a couple of seasons of use to determine where the effectiveness of the paint falls off... scrimping on the chemicals is a minor cost of a haul out...

Thanks. Actually think there is already too many layers of ablative paint on there anyway - oor the residue without the effictie components. In some places it is as thick as the thickness of a penny and is losing adhesion with the bottom (most noticable on the horizontal parts of the boat), thus even when prepping with the appropriate interlux solvent wash beforehand, the solvent in the new paint will lift the old paint and the bottom looks like the surface of the moon.

This is NE United States, the boat is in the water May through November only.

it's time to remove the old paint, painting over ablative paint is like building on a crumbling foundation,  by design it is supposed to fail ( wear away ),  I have seen some ugly bottoms with many coats of ablative paint,  pressure washing should get a great deal of it, the rest of it should come off easily by sanding,  the old paint should not offer much resistance so it should go fast.
