Knot meter transducer

The transducer for our knot meter isn't moving freely. Is there a lubricant that can be used to get it rotating freely?

Be careful of any solvent used which could eat up the paddle wheel. Would consider using a product like "Lime Away or CLR" to remove any scale which built up on the axle pin. Hose off aggressively when done.

If you use any lub product assume it will attract contaminants. Not sure if McLube would work after you cleaned the axle pin.

it's not about the lubricant...remove the transducer,  take the paddle out and clean it...   most paddle wheels have a simple shaft that pushes through allowing to change / clean the paddle and area... remove any prior lubriacnt... water is all the lubricant that is needed

Bill:  I've been using MDR transducer paint for many years with success.

It's always interesting when I yank out the transducer and insert the plug before too much water gushes into the boat...     I guess why towels and sponges were invented!!!

Bill,

You may want to soak the transducer in vinegar (overnight) to dissolve
any critter shells that are jamming up the works. A good cleaning is
all that is needed....no additional lubricant is required.

I agree with Ivars and Michael. Only cleaning should be required.

 If it is still not turning freely when everything is clean, then look closely at the area just under the paddle wheel. I have had transducers that have leaked internally and the circuit inside has swelled up so that the paddle wheel touches the body. If this is the case, I am afraid the conditional is terminal.

The instructions say to only use water based antifouling paint on the transducer. It is very hard to find here in Australia, so most yards just put a very fine  coat of whatever they are using on the hull. If there is too much exposure to the solvents in the paint, then that will damage the plastic of the transducer.
