Beneteau apparently sprays a water barrier into the mold when they layup the hull. I remember that Beneteau strongly cautions against abraiding  the hull by sanding with too course a grit.

My paint is chipping off right down to the shiny white gelcoat so a repaint is in my future. I will go from ablative to VC-17.
I am guessing that the mold release wax was not removed when it was initially painted.

Now my question, if I have the paint chemically striped rather than blasted or sanded do I still need to put on a barrier coats  of 2000 or tar? Will the VC adhere directly to the striped hull or is it necessary for adhesion for the VC to go on top of the 2000?

I have a bid of around $3000 for a strip, 4 coats of 2000 and 2 coats of VC. However at $100 bucks a gallon significant money can be save if the barrier coats are unecessary.

Thoughts????

Do the VC Tar barrier coats while you are down to the bare gel coat.  Reapplying VC 17 over the coming years will be a breeze once this step is done.
How hard can sanding the old  ablative off be?  DIY !

When I bought my boat, I did this. But my boat was built way before the barrier coat process. We went the DYI route following the VC Tar instructions to the letter. As Dean said, reapplications of VC-17 have been a breeze.

The B is a 2001 and sailed in fresh water. I would not use tar and have no idea if it is still made. If I have to put on a barrier coat it will be  Interlux 2000.

My question is if the hull is chemically stripped rather than sanded (so that the factory applied barrier is not damaged) is it necessary to apply new barrier coating? The new barrier will add about $500 to the job.

IMHO, if you’re going through all that expense to get the hull stripped of old paint, it would be crazy not to apply the barrier coat…

Neal: we have been using vc17 for years. Unless you have damage to the shield put on by B and the basis for their blister warranty, there is no need for barrier coat. Also I would use extreme care in removing the old paint. You do not want to damage the shield. This assume you have no blisters.

We find vc17 simple and painless to maintain. We have been very successful in getting multiple years from an application. Yes we touch up each Spring prior to launch. Takes less than half qt and 30 min.

Have you thought about using a chemical strip - Peel away etc rather than an abrasive based process

I often joke with the admiral that one can use the solvent in new bottom paint to remove old bottom paint

I just redid my bottom last week.

I had interprotect prior and added two coats as I sanded a bit away removing the old paint VC17.

In my case I needed just over a gallon per coat for a B400. 3 gallons 315$

I was told by Interlux that a far better chemical adhesion occurs between the 2000 and the paint if you apply the bottom paint in the correct time frame.

I read sometime back in a periodical about "10 year bottom paint" though I forget the name - has anyone tried this ?

I think it is CopperCoat.  It has been available in the US for only a few years.  I thought about it about 10 years ago when I saw a boat from Europe in the yard.  The finish on that boat was several years old then.  When it came out of the water, it had no slime or growth.  At the time I checked on it, I could get it from England at $500 per gallon.  That and the finish sort of killed that idea.  Am guessing here that the price is way less than that.  The finish appeared to be a lot of copper in a clear matrix thus it looked like rolled copper with big gaps.  The finish was very unfinished looking.

Thanks Bob,

I had VC-17 on my S2 and it was great. Not been happy with the ablative on my B. Guess I will give Interlux and Beneteau a call before I hire this done.
Sounds like I might need a coat of 2000 for better adhesion for the VC17 to the gelcoat.

$500?

My answer to that is how much do you value your hull?

VC 17m is great for  FRESH water only...

it is a very thin film,  recoating is easy,  wash with scotch brite pad to get anything sticking to the paint,  rolls on like it was sprayed,  it can be launched  an hour after recoating...  out first thing in the morning and baack in as soon as you are finished

I like the idea of a barrier coat for using it as a sanding guide to keep bubba from getting into the gelcoat with his grinder... I had barrier coat and still got blisters,  ( most likely by the "bubba factor"  )...

the barrier coat is sprayed directly over the gelcoat, it is thin and easily breached... this coating has more than a single function,  in addition to barrier it is used to reduce the transfer of the layup through to the gelcoat...

We are in salt water so the VC17 does not apply

If using an ablative paint what is common up here is for the first coat to be a different color - red under blue for instance. That way when the red shows up you know you have worn away to the lower coat and it is time to reapply. Same type of paint, just a different color

Yes the flake coat (first coat) under top coats color should be done.. but if the interprotect 2000 is used it must be used to build up 10 mil thickness.. this takes approx. 7-10 gals on a 40 footer to achieve that mil thickness.  It does not work if not done that way…so it is not a cheap job in materials and timing of coats and final to bottom coat is very, very important.  That said it is the best out there.. I use it and Micron 66 and get 3 years in Miami, FL.

Hi, I put the Coppercoat on last sept ... I am in Belize and everybody but me is always scrubbing, sail away and come home clean.  The lagoon here is very bad for growth as the average lagoon temp is around 90.  B 411 ..#14 took 12 liters at $125 per liter shipped from Florida to Long Island, Expensive but time will tell... SY /Chkm8 ... Paul
