Subject: Contest!!!! Name that Hackerspace and Design that Logo

As Jen, Gary and i started working on some promotional/recruiting
literature, the first things that rose up and bit us in the ass were:

   - We don't have a logo; and
   - There are problems with Bellingham Hack Space as a name (to wit: if
you say "BHS" everybody thinks you are talking about high school and there
is already another hackerspace with the initials BHS.)

In accordance in our unstated and unofficial policy of injecting the
maximum amount of thrills, danger, lust and adventure in to any available
situation, I have accordingly declared a contest.  You may submit as many
names for the Hackerspace/Makerspace/tool library/thingy as you like.  Same
goes for logos.

Email them direct to me paulfs...@gmail.com with the subject line Name or
Logo or If you're really ambitious Name/Logo.

We will post them at the next meeting and people can throw darts at them or
devise some other means of selection.

In the meantime, I've randomly chosen some completely unsuitable
placeholders for the layout work.  Don't Panic!  Search and replace solves
all sorts of problems, including this one.

It's going to be Hack Bham effective December 1 unless somebody has an
alternate proposal.  We need to get literature out for the general
membership meeting in January.

Seeking inspiration, for once I remembered to peek at the classics

http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/List_of_Hacker_Spaces

--and am quite blown away by the range of themes and creativity
expressed there (rather as I felt when I first found Eric Raymond's
Hackers' Dictionary)

So there are the serious (Center for Internet and Society), (Montana
Ethical Hackers); or just state purpose very directly (Lansing Makers
Network), (4-H Robotics & Technology Club), (Interaccess electronic media
arts centre),
- do so less overtly, with wit (Embassy of Nerdistan), (HacMan), (CrashBang
Labs), (Nerd-Cafe), (Dona Esperança =Lady Hope?), (Ohmspace), (Bitlair),
(Hammer Time!), (Urban Rethink), (VoidWarranties), (FIXME), (Splat Space),
(Sudo room), (Tinker Tank), (Jeanne D'Hack)
- have a geographical element in an interesting way (HackBo in Bogota),
(Hickerspace in Hildesheim), (FredHack in Fredericksburg), (Columbus Idea
Foundry), (Hackistan, in a real -stan)
- the totally obscure to the outsider, with a clue perhaps in the URL (Piel
View Hackers/octopuscollective.org), (Fishburners)
- the in-your-face (Cyberhippietotalism),
- less-than-obvious but interesting (Blind Security Uganda), (Noisebridge),
(Metrixcreatespace), (Jigsawrenaissance)
- some combination of the above (Geniaus), (Cowtown Computer Congress/
c3kc.org)

I suppose my preference is a bit obvious, but so far I haven't come up with
one.

Hack B(')ham is straightforward purpose/geography, in line with the
majority. ('HamHack is tempting, but probably not a good idea).

I actually rather quite liked Paul's mockup flyers with the name "Full
Wave." It seemed clever. :)

But I have to admit I'm rather partial to "Hack B'ham."

"Full wave" works, implies that we're upright citizens, whitehats, fully
rectified.

One possibility that I didn't see on the list was "Bits and atoms." It's
usually used to make the point that it's cheaper to move data than stuff,
but it would apply nicely to what we aspire to do. So how about
bits&atomsnorth, I5mile255bitsnatoms, distal5bitsnatoms, or
ultima5bits&atoms. (Of course we're only the farthest north on I5, someone
in Yellowknife or Point Barrow or Ketchikan might feel that we're
pretenders to the title. (Ultima Thule is the reference, hope it's not too
obscure)).

I'm partial to Hack Bham logos and short forms, Hack Bellinghmam for legal
documents.

This is partly me rolliing with the punches because I really like the deep
inplication of a full wave bridge rectifier.  But consensus appears to be
formenting Hack Bham and Hack Bellingham.

I will have dummies (all set for markup and distribution at this meeting
friday.)

So please come this friday and bring a friend (or an enemy, or total
bemused stranger.)  The final designs will be locked down.

P.
