Update: hackbham.com (and hackerspaces.org) has correct location and
time details. I added a getting started page as well as a bitcoin
donations link. If you log in, then return to the start hacking page,
the right sidebar will provide a custom Bitcoin address to pay dues /
donate attributed to your user name. I'm glad to discuss the back end
for this if anyone's interested.

Also, what should I use that I can access by ethernet and use to
control the speed setting on my 3-speed box fan?

Like, a house fan? You could connect a small microcontroller to an ethernet adapter, like one of these  http://geeetech.com/wiki/index.php/Arduino_ENC28J60_Ethernet_Module
Or, microcontroller directly to a nearby computer if you'd rather do that. I suppose you could also use a rasPi but its overpowered for this simple of a design.

If you're willing to go wireless, kick into this:

Otherwise, I can only recommend the incredibly expensive Arduino Ethernet ($35 from Mouser or $55 from Sparkfun). There are also some smaller alternatives like Arduino Nano Ethernet ($40 from http://goo.gl/g1reX).

I haven't really kept up with ethernet-capable boards as much as I have full systems like Beagleboard/bone and Gumstix.

The raspberryPi may be a bit over powered for  just a fan controller, but is possibly cheaper than using an arduino.

raspberryPi has ethernet built in, arduino you have to purchase an addition module
