Hi guys, Thought I should introduce myself. My name is Ryan. I'm in my late twenties and have been working on and around computers for 16 years. However, I'm relatively new to programming... so far I have only learned the very basics of Python. I find myself hitting brickwalls often and then upon searching the web for what I need, I find myself in a rabbit hole. I'm looking for a motivated person whom already knows or is also learning the language in order to bounce ideas around and work on projects together and such. I'm open to working on anything at this point while I slowly get my head around the whole OOP idea. How often do you guys meet and what goes on at the meetings?
I've dabbled in programming, but would consider myself a novice in general. The only thing that really helps is experience. I've found that http://projecteuler.net/ provides a pretty good and incremental set of problems. If you actually like math then that is a bonus. Also, when you finally solve a problem you get access to other people's solutions which is super beneficial.
I've only semi-recently moved to Bham, there doesn't appear to be any structure to meeting times that I noticed and I haven't actually been to any of the meetings so I can't say what occurs at them. They stopped shortly after my arriving in the area and the most recent one was announced at the last minute so I missed that one too. :(

Hmmmm, that first one only seems to offer Javascript. Or am I missing
something?
I do plan on learning Javascript down the road, but I'm pretty set on
Python for my first language.
Thanks for the links though!

I've been on this mailing list for a while, but also never made any of the meetings yet. I'm a software guy who's looking to get into tinkering with more hardware. I'd be more than happy to help you out with your python questions. While I've really only played around with python a little bit, I've been programming for the last 14 years and work as a software engineer. I enjoy teaching and helping people new to programming, although I haven't done a whole lot of it, and it's a good excuse for me to also brush up on python. Feel free to contact me directly at jesse.corring...@gmail.com. I can also probably make some time to meetup in person if you're interested in getting help in that way.

Hi ryan, sorry it took me so long to get on here and post. Ive been
trying to learn a bit more about python myself and if you read the
code snippet needed post
you can see kind of what im needing (or was needing then )
Im not sure when we will try another schedualed meetup (im going on
vacation next month so others will need to decide)
Im likely to stop by marks shop at least once more before my trip.

I wouldn't be able to help with any snippets at this point
unfortunately. My reason for reaching out was simply to try to mix it
up with other guys into computer science to keep me motivated, work on
projects together, etc. I didn't take CS in school (aside from a VB
class in middle school) so I'm sorta hitting this from the ground
floor.
I really want to learn Python, but over the last few days I've
actually changed my focus a little bit towards the basic web
technologies since the Python web frameworks assume a certain level of
pre-existing web development knowledge... and ultimately it's web
development that I'm most interested in. With Python (in it's current
form), I'd say it's great for software development but not so much for
web development yet (at least to learn web development). Although, I'm
sure Python will be a serious force for web stuff in a couple years,
the whole 2.x or 3.x thing is annoying right now and frustrating as a
student of the language. Should I learn 2.x if 3.x is going to be the
mainstream next year? Or is it 3 years from now?
Admittedly, I've done a lot of "tweaking stuff" over the years, but
never fully learned a language. I've got a long way to go, but I'm
studying like a maniac right now. The whole LAMP stack setup just
seems so much better integrated for web. So I'll probably just tackle
Javascript & php then revisit Python once I have a better
understanding of how data is moved from client to server to database
and back... baby steps I guess. =(
