In the past our tournaments had the ethos of increasing participation of the sport in Belfast, and I now get the impression they are more geared towards making a profit. I don't think the wee teams fit into this model. I feel like we're being shafted to clear Belfast Ultimates debt, which we didn't create. Personally I've found organising a team for these expensive Belfast tournaments stressful and demotivating. I felt ashamed asking people to pay £15-20 to play at Love Easter.

Linter.

Every tournament run needs to make a profit or what is the point in running them.                    Tournaments are a great source of income for clubs which they can use to develop their  club.

Personally I dont think that these prices that we charge are unreasonable.
Tour 1 london                £190
Tour 2                              £185
Tour 3                              £180
British Thumber time    £150

I believe that we are offering a good tournament with lots of facilities on site.
i.e. free camping    tour 1 is charging £5 per night
      Changing/showering facilities on site.
      A **free** Saturday night diner
Pub/Bar & hot food on site.

as for feeling ashamed to ask players for £15-£20 for a tournament that is the going rate for some hat tournaments at the moment. But again I understand that team fee based entries all depend on how many players you have to split the cost.

Would player fees be something that you would want us to look into in the future?

I dont honestly feel we are ripping the arse out of it.
In past tournaments we would not have made a profit if it wasn't for our membership of shorts.
That is the only reason we are able to make a profit.....and again if we cant make a profit then there is little point in doing it.
You have seen yourself from the xmas cracker the work involved in running a tournament.

I asked at the end of Love Easter for feedback and the feedback we received was good so we are carrying on trying to improve on that. In fact we were commended on how cheap it was for everything that players got.

If you have any ideas into how to carve something off the team entry fee and still provide all mentioned benefits above then please get in touch. As we will be happy to hear them

As for encouraging and developing the sport in Belfast we are still running our Summer League which is primarily based for developing the sport.
More info to go out on this very soon.

Cheers

That kind of honest feedback is appreciated linter. Not meaning to derail this thread but do people feel the current committee are making BU expensive and profiteering?

On the team front I'd like to go with 2 or 3 even BU teams. It's a good opportunity to play together as we get closer to all Ireland's. It also allows more casual players to enjoy a weekend tournament without being crippled on a team with only 1 sub.

Looking at the success of BU 2 at indoors I think mixing it up could work quite well.

Hi
I agree with everything Windy has said.
I would like to emphasise that you get subsatantially more than most tournaments and it is considerably cheaper. It is a mighty fine facility!!
On the cost front (and money for BU). We started the year with some clear issues that needed resolving. The club finances was the biggest one and this was generated by everyone involved in Ultimate in Belfast. We started dealing with this by making sure that no activity generated a loss, so for each and every activity we estimated the MINIMUM number of people to expect. We then based all our prices on breaking even with those numbers. I am glad to say that for most activities we have equalled or beaten those numbers.
For Love Easter we based it on a break even of 6 teams. This is also the starting point for "Not The Worlds". If we get more than 6 teams paying full price, then we will make a profit.
This is the only way to operate!!!
Our intention is to guarentee no loss to the club this year, and then once there is a safety net in the bank account, then (next year) we can change the pricing structure and risk a loss here and there. We will also have a clear structure of well organsiesd events and interest, which has been a little piece meal in previous years.

Additionally to all that, I would add that we are the Committee for Belfast Ultimate and as such are committed to BU. We have a development program in place and are doing our upmost to develop ultimate, some of us are developing in our own time, outside of the remit of BU.

As BU we have been liasing between UKU, Sport NI and Belfast City Council and have secured the final stages of the process for Ultimate to be recognised with the UKU as our authorised governing body. Once this process is complete we will be able to apply for a good funding source for events tailored to development of he sport at a very low cost.

As a comparison of whether £15-£20 for a weekend of sport and food is "expensive", a quick look at any sport centre website will show prices between £4-£5 for a 30 min session. So that would be a max of 2 hrs of sport for the above amount. We offered 7 games of 45 mins which is 5 hrs and fed and provided camping facilities.

Additionally to all that, Shorts is a BU venue, paid for by BU players. Why should the finances of those people subsidise the small team players who are not part of BU??
As for BU players playing in the tournament (especially if they play as BU), then any sensible suggestions as to pricing structure will be considered.

The committee would love to hear CONSTRUCTIVE comments on any subject, but in general there is either silence or negative comments. Neither of these things benefit anyone in any manner.

See you all at training later, and for a discussion in the bar after.

Cheers
Sich

Hi Folks,

My 20 cents... (and not 15-20£)
Keep the team fee instead of player fee. This is much much easier to handle.
140£ per team is really not expensive for all that we get. You don't get as much in other tournaments.

All in all, please keep runing the same format.
You guys got it right at Lovd Easter after the cahotic Not the Euro.

Cheers,

Benoit.

@Linter
I think the gist from Windy and Sich is that what BU offers is
actually very good value for money when you consider similar
competitions or facility hire.

That being said, I want to echo what Steve said and thank you for
giving feedback. Feedback is always appreciated. If you have any
further feedback (anyone out there, not just Linter) feel free to post
on this Google Group, or email the committee privately. Cheers.

And yes, exactly what Benoit said. Love Easter was a very well run
tournament. Same again lads!
Dave.

@Windy
But we're not hosting Tour 1 though, are we? Do teams train for months to come and win our tournaments? No. Smaller teams who don't train together from Belfast go to these tournament because it's in Belfast primarily and they'll be able to get enough numbers. It's a great way to get new players blooded into the weekend tournament format - play/party/play. Teams from down south (excluding Rebel) come to our tournaments for a piss-up. Full-stop. Agree?

Yes your list of facilities would be appreciated by a team coming up from down south but are no relevance to me personally. I won't be using the showering facilities and I'll choose to have a nap next time instead of tracking back to Shorts to eat my disappointing spaghetti bolognaise (which doesn't taste any better no matter how many asterisks you put around it). Yes... I didn't give you feedback at the time about Love Easter (bad Linter), but I was probably too tired/hungover from beating DUMP 13-1 and babysitting Broc!

@Sich
You guys have a plan and it seems fairly robust. I'm happy enough to sit on my lazy ass and let you guys run the show. In an attempt to be CONSTRUCTIVE IN CAPITALS I'll see if Wreckin Boyz can field a team for this tournament
