to Beijing Ultimate

frisbee travelers,

t-minus 9 days and counting until we leave for jeju.  i am sure by now that everything has been meticulously planned out to the most minute detail.  everyone knows what team they are on, everyone has their costume prepared.  excuses for missing work have been given, and jerseys are hanging in their closest, waiting to be worn.  all that's left is getting on the plane.

did i mention jeju is only nine days away?  yikes!  i better start packing.

WEEKLY ITEM #1:  The Weekly Schedule

Wednesday April 16, Pick Up, 7-9.30, BCIS

make sure to come out to frisbee at bcis this wed.  it will be the last time this week that frisbee will be indoors.

Saturday April 19, Big Brother Practice, 11.30-2.00 BCIS.

This will be our LAST practice before Jeju.  It's important that everyone be there, regardless of injuries.  The tianjin team will also be there.  We'll be taking advantage of being outdoors to do some serious scrimmaging.  A bus will be leaving from dzm at 11.  Be there on time!  I repeat, be there on time!!!

Sunday April 20, Pick Up, TBD

You would think with Char and Jason back from vacation, things would be running smoothly.  Instead, thanks to a school event at dulwich, we have no idea where disc will be this sunday.  Jeff Orcutt for president!!!

If you have questions call Korean Air at 400-658 8888

Party details will be forthcoming shortly. If you have ideas, send them to Reid, Julia, or Doc.

And here is the latest message from the organizing committee:

We are gearing up for another great year on Jeju Island as the tournament has grown to 28 teams this year, with over half of them boarding International Flights. That means over 250 players, and one heck of a good time.

A somewhat unfortunate situation has arisen for this year's tournament, but we've taken care of it to ensure an enjoyable weekend.  Our beloved Gangchanak Stadium was double booked for Saturday April 26. Our competition for the complex was 8000 tangerine farmers, and we must admit they produce some damn good tangerines every year. We considered attacking them with bananas to regain our fields, but realized that we must compromise with the Jeju Government that has been so kind to us with sponsorship over the years.

As a result, for Saturday April 26 we will be using three separate field locations. We have two grass soccer fields that can fit 4 fields total (2 each), and a state-of-the-art turf complex that can fit the rest.  One of the grass fields is even nicer than Gangchangak, while the other is still of good quality, but a little worn down from the Jeju United soccer team's winter training. The turf complex is the best turf you'll find anywhere, and better than most grass locations in Korea.

The top ranked 16 teams will play on grass, while the lower ranked 12 will play on the turf.  Lou, our scheduling expert has worked out a great system to minimize transport between fields.

On Sunday, April 27th, we will be back home at Gangchangak and use that as our main stadium.  This complex can hold 4 fields this year, while one of the nearby grass soccer fields will hold the other two as we will only use 6 fields on Sunday.

Although this situation is less than ideal, and logistically much more complicated for us, we assure you that we will make it simple and convenient for you.

We'd also like to make sure that everyone understands what you will get for your tournament fee. We will supply snacks and of course plenty of Free Beer on Friday night! Meals from Saturday at breakfast through to Sunday at lunch will be covered, along with lots more beer throughout the weekend. As always in Asian Ultimate you will receive a disc when you register on Friday night and PAY ALL OUSTANDING FEES including fees for extra nights at the hotel. Extra nights are any more that the two your tournament fee provides you.

The party theme is SCANDALS, as such, prizes for best costume will be awarded. We will also have other opportunities to win some fun prizes throughout the weekend.

To sum up, every team will play on grass over the weekend; lots of fun will be had as promised. Photos of the fields and further information are available on our website at www.koreaultimate.net/jeju.

We'll see you all real soon on beautiful Jeju Island!

now is the time in the weekly email when betsy gives her weekly shout outs, and call outs.  remember, you want to get shouted out, but you don't want to get called out.

a shout out to candice, for throwing the kickingest b-day party since nestorpalooza.

a call out to anyone who purposely laid a bunt at kick ball on saturday. you are the type of person that was mercilessly picked on as a child, and for good reason.

a shout out to bobby, who came all the way from qinghuangdao, and was still on time for practice. it makes you wonder why some people have such a hard time getting up a little early on a saturday morning, when all they have to do is get in a taxi or jump on the subway.

a call out to jeff, who managed to alienate sandy this sunday by harassing her about paying for the fields.  don't you realize that she books the fields for us?  and that because she works at dulwich we get the fields for half price.  thank god jason is back this week.  you almost blew everything for us.  way to go jeff.

a shout out to chip's new haircut.  it looks like we have our own little david beckham in our midsts. kudos!

a call out to everyone not going to jeju.  shame on you.

WEEKLY ITEM #3:  MAILBAG

every week, betsy gets a lot of emails inviting her out on dates, complementing her on her leadership skills, asking her ultimate related questions, and wanting to know who she is.  the mailbag is where she answers these questions.  as always, these are real letters from real readers.

Letter #1:

dear betsy,

since i'm in the states most of the time now, i won't be able to stay up to date on how people are getting to the airport for the tournament next week.  can you please ask everyone to keep me informed of their specific airport agendas.

Letter #3:

dear betsy,

i seem to be picking up mixed signals from you betsy.  i haven't been this confused since char offered to go to the rat pack with me, and then bailed out to go visit hong kong instead.  so do you like me or not?

muddle headed,

jeff

dear jeff,

welcome to the fickle world of betsy.

and char wasn't in hong kong. don't you read your weekly emails?

WEEKLY RUMOR THAT MUST BE TRUE: betsy has gained access to top secret communicae which indicates that julia and reid are not actually dating at all, but have been forced to "falsify the appearance of a relationship" in order to infiltrate the highest echelons of the beijing ultimate hierarchy.  the necessity of the feigned relationship has been frustrating to both of them, especially since each of them secretly covets someone else in the beijing ultimate community.  but duty calls, and so episodes like the one witnessed this saturday afternoon at kickball are all about maintaining appearances. unfortunately, so far their attempts to infiltrate the beijing ultimate power structure have met with abject failure.

WEEKLY ITEM #4:  Social Calender

Saturday Evening, Jenn Brown's VIP Party Extraordinaire!  Details Too Be Provided!

Are you friends with Jenn Brown?  If so, you already know the details for her exclusive, friends only, party this saturday night. If you aren't, it's not too late to convince Jenn to invite you.  I know that she's partial to banana bread and cold hard cash.

________

This week's rule clarification:

this came up sunday at pick up:

There is no stoppage of play when putting the pull into play. If the disc is to be put into play at a location other than where possession was gained, the thrower starts play by touching the disc to the ground after establishing a pivot at the spot on the playing field where the disc is to be put into play.

it turns out doc was wrong, and that the new 11th edition does away with the stoppage of play off a brick.

on a side note, someone yelling out a call from the sidelines is in no way a violation, unless it is purposely meant to distract or disrupt play (in which case it would be a serious violation of spirit).  the rules clearly state that:

A player's ability to catch or make a play on the disc is not considered to be "affected" because that player stopped, slowed down, or otherwise ceased to continue playing because a call was made by another player. Players are encouraged to make every effort to continue playing until play actually stops.

which brings us finally to your moment of zen:

this is footage from an alternate ultimate universe, where hitler was victorious.

catch you on the field,

betsy
