Hi,
I am running ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) as per http://elinux.org/BeagleBoardUbuntu#Lucid_10.04.1

I did a full gui install by sudo aptitude install xfce4 gdm xubuntu-
gdm-theme xubuntu-artwork xserver-xorg-video-omap3.

Now I am able to see ubuntu desktop on my laptop via VNC server. But
it only shows a desktop background and an xterm window.

I also installed firefox on it and able to run it from command line as
"firefox" but not icon or shortcut is seen on desktop.

I read in an earlier thread (http://groups.google.com/group/
beagleboard/browse_thread/thread/3670ed2c28b41042/be99269d667ae0ea?
lnk=gst&q=ubuntu+icons#be99269d667ae0ea):

You've loaded xterm.. On boot, when the gdm login appears, enter/
click the user name. If your
resolution is correct, do you notice a drop down menu on the bottom
with the setting "xterm"? Switch that to "xfce4", note this only
shows up with 'xubuntu-gdm-theme' which is why i had you install
that.. Now when you complete login, you'll start xfce4.

But I am not able to see that drop down menu. Do I need to change
resolution? How to do that?

Also mouse right click (of my laptop) or dragging of xterm window does
not work. Keyboard works but shift key is not detected.
Is it must to attach external keyboard / mouse to BB now? I will
anyway try that from a USB hub.

Thanks...

It's listed under "Session" Here's a quick example from a google search:

http://tinyurl.com/2bwvve4

The drop down 'session" shows GNOME in this example.. WIth your
current image, it'll show xterm as default and there's an option for
xfce..

With 'maverick' 10.10 this bug no longer occurs and it defaults to xfce..

Where is this 'shift broken' keyboard connected to beagle or pc?

Thanks Robert for reply.

I could see that drop down box but with Xfce session, the session gets
terminated after log in. With xterm, the login is normal.
The keyboard is of laptop, not yet connected to BB.
xrandr command on BB shows Max, Min and current resolution of
1280x720. So resolution changing is I think not possible.
Is there no way out other than trying Maveric?

Well it worked in another way. I started with xterm and then did a
sudo startxfce4. It showed some errors but started an xfce session
with icons etc on the desktop.
Mouse works good but keyboard is still not. Shift key doesn't work;
all keypresses end up in small case.
