Since I pointed out two, one that I know is quite good (f/calc) and
another that can be run in a browser, I don't need lectures from the
likes of you. Beyond that there is nothing magical about dof
calculators. Anyone with grade 9 algebra can do his own in a
spreadsheet or write his own little program. Possibly even you.

Am I helplessly out of date, or don't the lenses have the DOF
information engraved on the barrels? At least the lenses I use on my
35mm SLRS have that.

The lens marking on many lenses are useless for accurate DOF prediction.
My Hasselblad lenses have great DOF scales. My Minolta/Sony lenses have
useless DOF scales - likewise the high end Nikon 28-70 f/2.6 lens I just
sold.
However, the other reason for a DOF calculator is planning shoots,
making sure you have the right lens for the job (or re-plan the shooting
geometry).
Further, DOF markings are set for prints of about 8x10 inches. If you
intend to print at other sizes, then a DOF calculator will help you find
the change in aperture needed.
And further still, if using a "full frame" lens on a cropped sensor
body, the enlargement ratio changes, so the lens DOF markings are off.
Thank you for the infos. I'd be interested in creating my own DOF
application. I'm not a programmer but I am creating websites, and I learn
pretty fast. Could you perhaps tell me which program/language to use (for a
beginner) to make such DOF claculator?

In its help section you will find all of the equations (which you can
also find at wikipedia and a dozen other places). Just remember that
the units have to be taken with care: use the equations directly in mm
and you will have the least problems. That is to say, if the focus
distance is 8 meters, then it is 8000 mm used in the equations "as is".
Further, a CoC value of about 0.03mm is a good place to start ... oh,
0.025 for cropped sensors, I guess.
I'm not much of a web programmer (more old school
Fortran/Pascal/Assembler type), but many web compositing packages
support simple computations such as these.
