A review of the movie "Expelled", which I'm sure you will want to run
to the nearest theater to see after you read this. This review is
from the Seattle Times, and it absolutely cracked me up due to the
sheer ridicuousness of it all. I will not be watching this movie
because frankly, life is too short.
On to the review, by Stephen Witty. On a scale of one to four stars,
he gave it "NO STARS", and I've never seen a no star movie review in
caps in this paper before. The review is as follows:
"A highly slanted documentary about evolution-or as the movie refers
to it as "Darwinism"-and how its proponents have shut off any sort of
debate about whether our origins depend, not on random mutation, but a
Creator. There might be a story here, somewhere, about the conflict
between faith and science, but the filmmakers begin on a note of
hysteria and then go on from there, comparing scientists to Stalinist
thought police and blaming Darwin for abortion, euthanasia, and the
Holocaust."
Sounds like a winner to me! I'm sure it will win an Oscar and a whole
host of other awards as well! Beyond ridiculous, really. And once
again it brings up the fallacious suggestion that I so love, which is
that by supporting the theory of evolution, scientists are saying that
there is no God. These people need some serious help with reasoning,
logic, critical thinking, whatever you want to call it. Some
scientists believe that there is no God, of course, but it's not like
scientists as a group have stood up and said that there is no God
because of the theory of evolution. And when you start suggesting
that one cannot believe in evolution and also believe in God--that
drives me crazy. I've never had a problem believing in both...
Part of their problem may be their use and understanding of the
concept of randomness in evolution. Again, this has never posed a
problem for me, but it is a philosophical puzzle that could be a huge
problem for a lot of people who don't think about it the way I do.
I wonder what the creationists say now that this tree has been
discovered in Europe-- I think it was in Sweden; anyways, I heard one
report that said it is 8000 years old and one saying it is 10,000
years old. Kind of causes a problem if you believe that the earth is
only 6000 years old...
