I've just started using ResNet, and am not so savvy at this program
yet. I've created both an input file and target file as required, and
have also made use that there are no blank spaces in the directory.
The file info etc. looks like this:
C:\ResNet\InputFileData.txt
213
C:\ResNet\Target10
162
However, I am not sure whether the log and GIS require any
information? I simply set a path name, as above and the program
generates the files automatically. Also, is it imperative that the the
logfile is .log or is okay if it is a .txt? I have it in .txt format.
In any case, once that is done, I get the normal 'ResNet is about to
execute the place prioritization algorithm' message. I clkick okay,
and then get the following message (fatal error):
'Interface MFC Application has encountered a problem and needs to
close.'
I am not too sure what to make of this. I have tried the program on
another computer (that is somewhat older than my own machine) but had
the same problem.
Thank you for your interest in ResNet. My replies are below preceded by [>]. I think the quickest way for us to diagnose this problem would be for you to upload logfile.txt, InputFileData.txt, and Target10.txt to the "Files" section of the Google Group using the "+ upload file" button.
Thanks again, Trevon

[>] I assume that the four lines that begin with C:\ResNet\InputFileData.txt are the contents of logfile.txt. I noticed that there is no ".txt" file extension on Target10. I.e., "C:\ResNet\Target10" should be "C:\ResNet\Target10.txt". You might try adding the extension to see if this fixes the error.

[>] This is to confirm that the log file and the basic GIS output file are created by ResNet and do not need to be created by you. I always use the ".txt" extension for the log file, so .txt is OK. Note that "the log file" is different from "logfile.txt". "The log file" describes the events in the ResNet run and can have any arbitrary file name. "Logfile.txt" is a file that describes the settings for the ResNet run. It is created by the GUI and always has the name "logfile.txt". Make sure to name "the log file" something other than "logfile.txt".

[>] This error could happen for many reasons. We'll help you sort this out. The error could be because ResNet can't find the target file because it lacks the ".txt" extension or because the number of species or cells in the ResNet input file is different from the values listed in logfile.txt. If you send us the files that I mentioned, we should be able to figure this out pretty quickly.

Thanks for your quick reply! I have uploaded the files as requested. The Target10.txt file has the the .txt extension. I just didn't notice my mistake when I copied the information into the email. I also changed the name of logfile.txt to Logoutput.txt, but that hasn't changed anything. The program still aborts, and the same error message appears.
Cheers,
John.

Thanks for sharing the files. Your ResNet input file was very close to
being in the correct format. There was a minor problem with the file,
which was that the file was tab delimited rather than space delimited.
ResNet requires that the input file is space delimited. Otherwise, the
tabs are misinterpreted as numbers, which is why ResNet crashed.
I converted your ResNet input file to space delimited by opening
the tab delimited file in Excel, saving it as CSV, then opening the
CSV file in Notepad and replacing all of the commas with blank spaces.
Using the space delimited file, ResNet runs correctly on your data. I
am uploading the space delimited ResNet input file to the "Files"
section of the Google Group. The space delimited file is called
"JohnResNet.txt".
Thanks again,
Trevon

Thanks for your effort Trevon! Everything works very nicely now.
I've noticed that when saving for a space delimited file in excel, the only option is to save it as a .prn (Formated text). I then covert the file into a .txt in Notepad.
Cheers,
John.
