Hi all,
Well, got a used iPhone at a really good price. As Apple are my no.1 favorite products, I had to leave my 2nd love BBOS for now. I'm staying here though, as I'm very interested in hearing about the new screen reader, and will always support RIM, and might even return to a bb device someday. Btw, I'm going to miss the physical keyboard, but iOS has the best soft keyboard and predictive text there is, so I think I can live with just a touch screen for now. Long live RIM and BBOS!

Actually you might find that android with ice cream sandwich and the eyes
free keyboard is much better than iOS.

Just saying....

Oh, dear, no! I hate Android with a passion! Oh goody, 4.0 on like 1% of models. Even the iPhone's keyboard is better than any android touch screen device. It's iOS or BBOS, and nothing else for me.

I could start a debate on this because i have tested several androids with ics.
Android parden the words is a half assed job and until blind people
who suport this half effert and don't presure for more are pretty bad.
I got removed from the eyes free list just for posting messages
against their half assed effert and wanting better.

Glad to see you will be staying around. A demo will be forthcoming
very soon, just as soon as I get my BlackBerry.

Very eloquently put! Not to mean security flaws and holes in the os. I almost got kicked out too. I've had to wipe android phones on two different occasions because of memory leaks. Bottom line is I wouldn't wish Android on my own worst enemy.

lol,

I doubt that. Don't get me wrong, Google has come a long way since 1.6 but, I don't think overall accessibility has reached the simplicity and usability of IOS. I hope it will in time. The more options we have, the better.

LOL; I hope you feel the same about BB OS as you do about Android than.
Because there is tons more that can be accomplished on an android device
running ICS than on a BB device (as a blind user); at present.

Well I am not against anything, and I have to remind you I haven't tested
black berries OS so right now I can't say anything.
In the other hand android I've tested with ice scream sandwich like I said
and it is good and viable for those who can't or don't want an iPhone, but
not for me since I like to have accessibility if I want to be on the web,
send a text, and or anything else I would like to try on my device.
To be honest apple has set the standard for accessibility and what everyone
should want is equal access threw out whether it is black berry, windows
phone, android, or an iOS device.
I personally would exchange my iPhone for an android device if it was close
in accessibility to apple, but they way things are I won't.
So I am most definitely am not against android I just want for us to have
equal access threw out all platforms not settle for the hand outs you get.
This is the main reason why I was kicked off the eyes free list because I
voiced my opinion about the half assed effort googles accessibility team has
done and none of the android lovers liked that.
I am not an apple fan boy I am not an android fan boy or any other platform.
Hope you all get the point I am trying to get through here and ones I've
been able to test black berries screen reader I will be able to form an
opinion about it as well and I will voice it whether it is for or against
the screen reader.

Great.

Although, with talkback and ice cream sandwich you have 4 browsers to choose
from... that all work fine:
- the built in 1 (free)
- ideal web reader (free)
- the latest nightly builds of firefox (free)
- mobile accessibility's browser (for pay)

You also have tons of free texting apps
- text talk is the best as it has the best voice rec / talkback combined
interface that is actually quite a bit better than anything I've seen on iOS
- go sms and handssend both work with talkback (I rather like go sms)

The stock browser isn't as accessible as you may think I am currently the
owner of a Galaxy S from Verizon the one that iCS was released on.
I have the latest updates as well.

I just wanted to point out that as we have seen time and time again,
there are instances, and I can name several, where one user of a
particular product may not have the same experiences as say another.
This was of course shown last year when I used my blackberry bold 9650
with the screen reader developed by Humanware.

This is very true. Accessibility, and usability can be very subjective.

I agree, although if it is functionally possible to accomplish a task
without sight than it can be done. How easily depends on the user /
scenario. I am just saying that without sight it is possible to browser a
large number of mainstream sites on android. Something it was not possible
to do effectively on BB or previous cursor less android devices.

Personally, I find it easy to accomplish.

I think it's great that some have had really good experiences with Android,
others with IOS and soon others more with BlackBerry. This is indeed what
this list was created for (the discussion of mobile accessibility
particularly as it pertains to that of the BlackBerry platform); however, I
do like some of the debating back and forth with regard to the other mobile
devices out there today. This being said, I have no problem with this
particular discussion continuing on the list so long as we don't stray too
much off the general topic of this list which is of course the accessibility
factor of the BlackBerry.

I would ask though, if you want to discuss Android that we change the
subject lines to reflect this so that people are not confused.

Well i won't denie it has come far but you have to admit with how
widely spread android is on handsets and all the different over lays
the manufacturers put you won't get the same level of accessibility no
matter what arguments you present.
If the bb screen reader is improved to match ios many blind users will
leave android.
Bb like ios is many devices but one manufactuer which you will never
get with android.

Dear all,

So far the discussion here was quite interesting and most of it I can totally support. But can anybody here give us a hands-on experience report i.e. how is the Blackberry screen reader working, what can you do with it, what can you not do with it, etc.

Thanks in advance for your efforts!

Solong
