Announcing the Fifth Institute for Rights, Activism & Development
March 2008, Nepal The Institute for Rights, Activism and Development
(IRAD) is an annualweeklong residential training program designed by
Creating Resourcesfor Empowerment in Action (CREA). The Fifth
Institute is designed forwomen working in the development sector in
South Asia to examine thehuman rights system and its approaches. The
Institute focuses on thelinks between theory and practice, with an
emphasis on socialmovements, development practices and the application
of rights, in theSouth Asian context. Course Content The course
content of the Institute includes: rights and history ofglobal
activism, rights in the context of South Asia, theintersections of
rights, gender and health, Dalit rights, rights andsexuality, HIV/
AIDS, as well as tools for rights, activism anddevelopment. The medium
of instruction and discussion is English.The 2008 IRAD core faculty is
Pramada Menon and Joy Liddicoat. Theywill use a mix of teaching
methods such as lectures, discussions,readings, case studies, films,
and group exercises. Joy Liddicoat is a human rights lawyer and
Commissioner with the NewZealand Human Rights Commission. Her work at
the Commission hasinvolved general governance responsibilities,
development of the NewZealand Action Plan for Human Rights and work on
issues ofdiscrimination, harassment, violence, and women's human
rights. Pramada Menon is Co-Founder and Director Programs, CREA. She
hasworked in the development sector in India and internationally for
overtwo decades as a women's rights activist. Her work has focused
onissues of sexuality and sexual rights, livelihoods, gender
anddevelopment, violence against women and organizational
development.She is on the Board of Directors of several non-profit
organizationsin India and is on the Advisory Council of the Global
Fund for Women. Organizer Creating Resources for Empowerment in Action
(CREA) is a non-profitorganization based in New Delhi, India. CREA
empowers women toarticulate, demand and access their human rights by
enhancing women'sleadership and focusing on issues of sexuality,
sexual andreproductive rights, violence against women and women's
rights. Eligibility Criteria Women who are development practitioners
working in South Asiacommitted to learning about human rights systems
and approaches, andtheir applications, are eligible to apply. Twenty-
five participantswill be selected. Selected participants will be
expected to stay forthe whole duration of the course. Cost and Venue
The Institute for Rights, Activism and Development will be held
inNepal. Tuition, boarding and lodging costs will be covered for
allparticipants. Participants are expected to contribute US $60
towardsthe course and cover their own travel expenses. The Ford
Foundationsupports the Institute. The venue of the Institute will be
announcedlater. The brochure and application form are attached to this
