Found a new website (in beta still) that is working to compete against Thingiverse: http://physibleexchange.com/
Haven't had a chance to really check it out yet. But thought I would pass it on. Their TOS (at least part of it): We will never claim to own your designs. And we will always attribute ownership to you. We need the TOS to give us the rights to show your physibles on the site, but you will still own them and can take them with you whenever you want. Eventually the TOS will say this clearly, but I am not a lawyer so, as I said, it’s a work in progress.
Please drop by, register if you like, and start using
it. If you're a newly-registered user you should be
able to post in any area except the 'administration'
board. And the 'administration' board has a 'Q&A' section
for questions and suggestions where you're able to post
subject to moderation. Don't hesitate to use it just because
your posts won't be immediately visible; those suggestions
and questions will drive the future of the board.
I'm occupied for the rest of today, but I'll be back
around midnight to delete the first wave of spam. *sigh.*
I hope I'm wrong about that, but, you know. Public mailing
list with webbed archives, announcing a new bbs system, and
I'm going to be away for hours.... well, spambots are the
expected result. Please bear with me until I get the
configuration and monitoring figured out to minimize it.
I've worked my way through setting up the database and
getting phpbb working, configuring permissions, tossing
up a few initial forums, figuring out a few crucial
problems (things not showing up because language was
set to 'en' instead of 'en_us' etc), and writing an
introduction.
I still need to configure phpbb in detail, customize
theme and graphics, etc.
Now that I've got a database server and a forum running,
I'm going to start looking at bug databases and revision
control systems for the files-and-projects end.

That seems like a good idea. And of course there is no real
distinction between a host and a client in bittorrent. I could
put up a bittorrent server with open-sourced designs, very
easily.

What's the point of a bittorrent download method? Is there any specific
reason to download it from a torrent? The problem with it is that people
may stop seeding and then it's lost.

because I'm goofy like that. could be a selling point.. working toward decentralizing opensource designs. i haven't run any numbers personally, but couldn't it help with server/bandwidth loading too?

It would probably save bandwidth. Its just tricky - you'll only have
seeders if they don't move the file, and current bittorrent systems are
very simplistic; you download a file and you seed it until you move it. But
files that don't get downloaded often won't seed quickly (as people won't
be looking for them), and most users probably don't want to leave their
downloaded 3d models in their bittorrent downloads folder (full of movies
and porn, at least for me) but actually move the 3D model file to its own
place (3d models are one of the few types of files I keep reasonable
organized).
This problem could be solved if bittorrent systems would allow you to save
different filetypes to different folders. Currently the options are
"download everything to the same spot", "ask me where to put it every time
I download something", and... that's it. Honestly a site that shared 3D
models would work a lot better if bittorrent clients were improved. If I
had a few categories I could assign to certain download folders, and when I
started a torrent I could just select from "movie, porn, 3d model, other",
then I'd be much more likely to keep files in their destination folder long
enough for them to seed.
For current systems, you might save on bandwidth a bit, but I think most
users would move the files before the next downloader comes a long (given
the short download time and long time between downloads).

What's all this about torrents? Just slap some files up on an http/git
server. Geeze.

As long as I keep up a file host (whether for FTP or Bittorrent or
both), the material is not lost.
In fact, Bittorrent is actually more reliable since it provides
additional sources for the download. With Bittorrent, even if
my host machine goes down, the material is still available as
long as anyone *else* continues to seed it. FTP on the other hand
has a single point of failure. With FTP, if the host machine goes
down there is *no* source until I get it back up.
For further redundancy, it would be nice to be able to burn and
publish collection archive discs, the way Linux distributions get
published.

If it's of any help to others, I'm currently working on 3D modeling hosting
based on git at a site called Cubehero. I've been using it to host my own
projects, the latest of which are shadowblocks (they're cubes that cast
shadows of three letter acronyms)
You can upload photos, and through git, see visual diffs of your models,
and write instructions in markdown. And every time you clone a repository,
you get a copy of it as well as its entire history. Therefore, if the host
happens to go down, everyone still has a copy on their local machines.
Generally, what I'm hearing is that people want control on how their
creations are hosted and shared, and at least some way of having a copy of
their projects if their host goes down. I know git is still a barrier to
entry, but eventually, I will make that easier as well. Let me know if you
have any questions.

Okay, I have to ask. Are you the same Wil Chung who worked at
NativeMinds in 1993 or 1994?
'Cause if so, Hi! And how's life been treating you?
