Native American War Veterans Sought for Online Survey
Calling all Native American war veterans. The Department of
Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts Boston needs you to
participate in an online survey that will attempt to gauge the words
of war used by American soldiers.
The goal of the study, called Terms of Engagement: Understanding the
Words of War, is to better understand the experiences of American
soldiers who fight for their country and how they have talked or
continue to talk about those experiences. This survey, which should
take no more than 40 minutes to complete, seeks information about
certain phrases that refer to battle conditions and/or enemy
combatants. Specifically, it wants to learn more about when, where,
why and if some American soldiers refer to "the Wild West," “Indian
Country” or “cowboys and Indians.” It also wants to know participants’
opinions on such phrases and their usefulness or appropriateness. To
learn more about the survey or to participate, click here. or google
words of war project.

Wake Up Call for Canada: It’s time to stop violence against Indigenous
women

“The committee…recommends that [Canada] develop a specific and
integrated plan for addressing the particular conditions affecting
Aboriginal women… including poverty, poor health, inadequate housing,
low school-completion rates, low employment rates, low income and high
rates of violence.” United Nations Committee on the Elimination of
Discrimination Against Women, November 2008.

On November 25th, the International Day for the Elimination of
Violence Against Women, set your alarm clock a couple minutes early so
that you can send the government of Canada an urgently needed wake-up
call.

Amnesty International is calling on people in every region of the
world to start their day on November 25th by sending an email to
Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper asking his government to take
immediate action to address the high levels of violence faced by
Indigenous women in Canada.

According to a government statistic, young Indigenous women in Canada
are five times more likely than other women of the same age to die as
the result of violence. The Sisters in Spirit Initiative of the Native
Women’s Association of Canada has documented more than 520 cases of
missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada, most within the last
three decades. Because of gaps in police and government reporting, the
actual numbers may be much higher.

The Canadian government has condemned the violence and promised to
take action. However, efforts to date have fallen far short of the
response needed to address such serious and pervasive human rights
violations.

Indigenous women's organizations and international human rights bodies
have called on Canada to adopt a comprehensive, coordinated plan of
action to stop violence against Indigenous women and address the
marginalization and discrimination that contribute to this violence.
There's no excuse for delay.

Hintil Ku Ca will be closed July 30 and moved to Laurel CDC if the
state budget does not get passed. We are looking at Hintil’s site
budget to see what it costs to keep us open and scrambling for
alternatives....possibly we could get some funding from the tribes to
help us out? Hintil is the only Native American Child Development
Center in an urban setting in California which should account for
something. Is this how OUSD values the native community and our
children and families....? There was a meeting June 29 with OUSD and
there will be a community meeting Tues, July 6 (at Hintil at 5:30) and
another public meeting with the OUSD Thurs, July 8 (at Hintil - 6 pm).
It is very important that everyone attend, strategize and show your
support for Hintil. FMI: Corrina Gould shellmo...@yahoo.com or

Seasons Greetings. Remembering: Dec 26, 1862, Execution of the
Dakota 38 in Mankato, MN, the largest mass execution in American
history, following trials that condemned over 300 Dakota in the 1862
Dakota Conflict. The unpopular intervention of President Lincoln
saved 265 other Dakota from the mass hanging, the concluding scene in
the opening chapter of the American-Sioux conflicts that would not end
until the Seventh Cavalry completed its massacre at Wounded Knee, SD,
on December 29, 1890, of more than 150 Lakota.

Wokiksuye. Memorials. Dakota, Lakota and many others hold Memorial
Rides and Runs to remember those who were killed in these events.
Beginning in 1986, a group began the Big Foot Memorial Riders to honor
the victims of the Wounded Knee Massacre; as riders subject themselves
to the cold weather, lack of food and water as they retrace the path
their family members took to Wounded Knee. They carry a white flag to
symbolize their hope for world peace, and to honor and remember the
victims. The 6th Year of the Dakota 38+2 Wokiksuye Memorial Horse
Ride and Annual Mankato Run are also taking place Dec 10-26 ending in
Mankato, MN as the dream of prayer, healing and forgiveness for
riders, communities and nations continues.
