It's been awhile, so I though I'd stir the Battling Free group up a
little bit. A few new services have been introduced to consider for
making money on your Web sites in addition to job postings, or however
else you're keeping on the lights.
1. AdBrite ([link]) - I'm currently running their code

Hi there, I'd like to ask you a few questions about a name
we are considering for a new web site. It is a classifieds
web site, where you can buy and sell,
and it will be called DingoDaddy.com...
1. What, if anything, do you like about that name?
Anything else? And anything else?
2. What, if anything, do you dislike about that name?

 Chris:
The value of any item is based more upon its value to the buyer than to the
seller. If you look at its value to the seller, that's more of a cost
analysis than a value analysis. While it is important to price anything
higher than its cost, you're leaving money on the table if you accept less
than its value to the buyer. You may want to retain an investment banker who

Hi gang, I need some input from my fellow job boarders. My question is
this...
How do I value my online job board business? I have been approached by
some firms and I need to give them a price at some point. I have spoken
to a few people in the industry and the numbers I have heard mentioned
so far are 1.5 to 5 times revenue.

Interesting, its obvious they are trying to find alternate revenue
streams. Getting job seekers to pay for things is on my to-do list
also. My sites I have a "Pay per contact" system where employers can
search the resumes for free but cant see the candidates contact info.
They then use the system to contact the candidate and if the candidate

"Rumor has it that Monster is quietly testing a system where employers
pay-per-resume every time a record is clicked via a search of their
resume database.
"Although unsubstantiated, such a system makes sense. It would play
right into Monster's strengths vs. the commoditization of job content
that is Google, Craigslist and others: Their resume database (and

One has to be careful of this in the UK as the employment agencies act
prevent you from charging job seekers for finding them a job. Naturally the
law has not kept pace with the internet as many sites already do this by
using a reverse sms model.

I'd be interested in views on the cost of using a job board compared to
what they deliver. In my opinion, a single job should be no more than
£50 not the £300-£600 that some of the bigger job boards quote. I
also think that unlimited packages of circa £2,000 per month are also
way over-priced but employers keep on paying.

Personally I think it has a big place. I only work with retailers, and
whilst they are a massive industry, there are niche's within the niche!
As Guy Kawasaki says, you've got to create something really compelling
and that of course will be the difficult bit.
My view, is that the job advertising should be free and as Joel

I've been really intrigued with the concept of creating a job community
as opposed to a traditional job board. With the commoditization of
jobs, it seems targeting a very specific niche and building content
around the jobs instead of the other way around is a smart move.
I touched on this idea back in December

I'm kind of on the fence for this one. I see the value of vertical
search engines but also see the value of having a niche 'community
portal' that may or may not help in attracting passive job seekers. As
I only work in the Retail sector I can see elements of both working.
I'll be including various bits into my own site so watch this space...
