The underwater soundscape of the Arctic is anything but silent. Especially in the spring, sounds of bowhead and beluga whales and bearded seals fill the ocean with noise. Each species makes sounds that are distinct and these differences can be used to study the animals all year long, even in complete darkness and heavy ice cover. Kate Stafford is a researcher from the University of Washington who has been coming to Barrow since 2007 to study underwater sounds. She will present some of the research techniques used and results from various acoustic studies and share sounds of Arctic animals and ice.
