Meet the researchers and educators who are working together in Barrow this week to infuse current Arctic ecosystem science into the North Slope Borough School District science curriculum. The lesson plans and units they develop will incorporate western science and Inupiaq traditional knowledge and also be shared worldwide over the Internet. Seven NSBSD teachers will be working with seven teachers from other states who have participated in Arctic research and several polar scientists, including local scientists, who specialize in the study of the ocean "from physics to whales to humans." The scientists will provide the teachers with information about their current research and collaborate in the development of the lesson plans and units.
Dr. Jaqueline Grebmeier, a benthic ecologist based at the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory in Maryland will provide an overview of the Arctic Ocean Ecosystem and the other scientists will describe how their research fits into the "big picture" of Arctic research.
