I don't mean to be too forward here but as online comms is my relevant
area of expertise I thought I'd put forward a suggestion for a plan to
tell others. I am also aware that this approach may not be suitable
(I am a BarCamp N00B)

Communications objectives for the BarCamp could include.

Before the event
1) Raise the profile of BarCampWellingtonNZegov to encourage
attendance
2) Explain the process of BarCampWellingtonNZegov to the wider
community to raise the perceived value of the event. This will
increase the impact of any outcomes from the event and support post
event communications.

After the Event:
3) After the event communicate the outcomes of the event
4) After the event publicise follow up steps to support the outcomes

In addition to blogs two other channels are open to achieve these
goals

1) Above the line: CPC advertising - NZPA is willing to sponsor a $50
Google Adwords campaign on relevant key words directing web traffic to
a information site ( e.g. to the wiki?)
2) Below the line: Mainstream media - NZPA is willing to sponsor the
distribution of two press releases (one before and one after) through
the MediaCom press release distribution service. There is also
potential of leverage off existing relationships within the media (for
example I have already spoken to Tom Pullar-Strecker who would be
willing to publicise the event in Infotech Weekly).

Things to do:
· Agree that this approach is suitable
· Suggest other ideas for communication
· Draft a timeline for communication
· Agree landing page for AdWords that has information about the event
(supporting objective 1)
· Compile list of keywords for AdWords campaign
· Draft and distribute initial press release (supporting objective 2)
· After the event draft and distribute press release (supporting
objective 3 or 4 or both)
· If there is any budget left for Adwords: post outcomes on the web
and drive traffic using Adwords (supporting objective 4)

Once people have provided some feedback about this approach and if it
is suitable I will prepare and distribute a draft timeline for telling
others.

Critiquing this approach, I would say the hardest aspect would be
agreeing and signing off a press release for distribution, and open to
ideas on how this can be best achieved using a distributed decision
making model (assuming there is no leader for this event).

All looks sweet as for me - I'm waiting for (should I be?) collateral - posters, flyers and the like - I s'pose we're  waiting for the logo to be OK'ed.

Fronde have a stand/area at the upcoming Government Insights conference and are happy to give out flyers, have posters etc.
Conscious not to make it a "corporate sponsored event" but anything that we can do to raise the profile then we're up for it.

Anywho - grand plan (especially the Adwords campaign, nice touch).
