Hello Raxit and Arpit,
Would some members of the Saturday Start Ups be in the early growth stage
- with some staff and some paying customers in place?
Then here is a novel proposal for student-entrepreneur interaction with a
mutually beneficial outcome.
SPJIMR, founded by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, ranks among the top ten B
Schools in India. During the 1st year students get a thorough grounding
on how enterprises operate. They gain knowledge on challenges faced by
companies and ways of responding to them.
Proposition
For 2nd year students, the institute offers a pioneering course in
entrepreneurship, where the emphasis is on the entrepreneur and on
managing a new venure for profitable growth.. The course has a pratical
purpose, which is for student teams to spend time with a 1st generation
entrepreneur and understand how an enterprise is built from scratch.
Interaction with the entrepreneur provides first-hand insight on the
entrepreneurial mindset.
The students, in turn, apply their cross-functional knowledge and
techniques, to undertake a SWOT of the company within the business
environment in which it operates. This results in charting the road map
or Business Plan for the company, emdedded on the vision and values of the
entrepreneurial team.
The deliverable to the entrepreneur will be the Buisness Plan prepared
in consultation with the entrepreneur The focus of the business plan
will be in identifying opportunities for profitable growth over the next
3 to 5 years. The emphasis on financial parameters will be to the extent
hard data is made available.
The business plan will be presented on August 9th at LST - 2008, jointly
by the 1st generation entrepreneur and the student team. 18 businesses
will be showcased at LST before student "investors" who will play an
investment game created by SPJIMR and NEN. Simultaneously, a jury panel
will listen to thepresentations and decide on the award winning
presentations. So far, 72 businesses (drawn from our Familiy Managed
Business ( FMB )Program, have taken part in 4 LSTs since inception.
Execution
Each business will have one team of 4 students to work on the business
plan. The students will interact with the entrepreneur and his
designated staff for getting to know the business dynamics. The
involvement of SPJIMR 2nd year students with the business of 1st
generation entrepreneurs beyond the start up stage, would add value
to the business. They will allocate time to study the business, on-site
and off-site, between now and July 31st, The project work will result
in the business plan prepared jointly with the entrepreneur for
presenting at LST on August 9th. The frequency and nature of engagement
of the student team will be
discussed and finalised at the initial meeeting which can be held any
time now. The student team that will work with you will contact you in
this regard.
I invite members of your fraternity,as 1st gen entrepreneurs,
to this initiative, if you see
mutual benefit in the association.
I look forward to your response as soon as possible.
