As the *Camp meme spreads further and further from it's origins, I often find myself recanting the story of FooCamp and BarCamp, and how things came to be. Unfortunately I'm a little fuzzy on dates for the beginning events. Does anyone have a rough timeline of the original camps?
It'd be fun to the data in the barcamp wiki and watch the idea spread... Hmm, maybe with KML and google earth... :)

Maybe first assign some wiki space to the project, to gather contributions of records, images, links, anecdotes, etc, from the *camps -- there wouldn't need to be any limit to the size or time-span of that part of such a project, just archiving the things worth noting, remembering and passing along -- then a flashed-up timeline could be assembled, and occasionally re-assembled over the years?

Flash--! SRSLY. Have you learned nothing from BarCamp?! :P
j/k, but let's keep our formats open so next generation can enjoy our creations royalty free, m'kay?
In fact, all you need to do is figure out how to take the hCalendar content from the homepage and http://barcamp.org/PreviousBarCamps and map it to a SIMILE timeline:
I couldn't get it to work, but ideally, we'd be able to use the microformatted content we already have (and what's on Upcoming) and then make it using Google Earth. I'd love to see something like that.

You'll need a somewhat recent version of Google Earth to view the timeline data in this file.
Some fun tricks:
If you select the barcamp folder and then click on the clock next to the timeline at the top, and select "clamp beginning..." and "restrict time", you can watch the barcamp meme spread over the first year.
You can also hit the 'play' button under the folder of barcamp placemarks to take a virtual tour, visiting each place that barcamp has sprung up. It's amazing a) how many of these places I was completely ignorant about (where is Saskatoon? Vienna?) and b) just how far this idea has spread, and this just shows the first year!
I'll likely add 2007 soon. Consider this kml public domain, please add to it, make things from it, etc :) Just be sure to let us know what you do with it!

Actually, you've hit on something I have been thinking about in general, which is "how to map microformats to RDF?"
Do you, or anyone else reading this, know much about this? I was exploring SIMILE as a tag mapping system for some people I collaborate with. Would love to be able to incorporate many established microformats....

This is probably a better subject for the Microformats list, but it's been considered and discussed before, but I'm not sure what the point would be?
