Hi everyone, Yep, it's true, *that* Richard Stallman is travelling around the world promoting Free Software, and has found time to fit Bangkok into his schedule. This could be a once-in-a-lifetime chance for many people to hear him talk.

He's giving a keynote at 7:30PM, Friday, October 30th, 2009, KIS Int'l School, Bangkok. The organisers are having trouble getting the word out. Please tell people to tell people, and come yourselves. They are also interested in setting up a BarCamp style event.

Dear Mike,

Thank you for writing.

This was an encouraging message to receive.  We do not have your bar camp-type organizational experience and are having trouble getting the word out effectively.

Subject: FlossEdBk inquiry re: Richard Stallman
     To: flos...@flossed.org

Dear FlossEdBk organisers,

Hello, my name is Mike Amy and I'm a software developer working in
Bangkok. I also volunteer/participate in BarCamps with the BarCamp
community here in Bangkok.

I noticed that you are running the FlossEdBk conference and have
Richard Stallman as a speaker.

This is very exciting to me and I'm sure many members of our
community. We would very much like to hear Mr Stallman speak.

So, regarding your arrangements:

1. Is the speech intended only for educators and students, or would it
be OK for us to come? What rates would we have to pay?

***The rates would be the same.
Free for high school students.
100 Baht for university student who forget to bring a teacher.
Free for university and high school students who bring a teacher. Up to 10 per teacher.
750 for adults (including teachers).

2. Also, regarding the rest of the conference, would it be worth us
attending if we are not educators?

***We would love to have you.  You'd probably bring a refreshingly broad outlook to the conversations.  In addition to RMS, there will be talks by Thailand's Creative Commons guru and also the Department of Intellectual Property (2 sides of the issue).  There will be an interactive whiteboard demo a la Johnny Lee, too.  Of course there will be workshops on Ruby and Python, and Gnu-Linux system admin. There are a couple of workshops on drupal (theming and module building), and one on the "semantic Web."  Finally, there will be teaching-related workshops on drupal, typo3, a talk on licensing regarding student's research papers, and at least one on the pros and cons of working in a FLOSS school.

What do you think?

3. Perhaps this might be pushing it a bit too far, but it might be
interesting to meet and talk with Mr Stallman in person. Are there any
events planned outside of the conference where this might be possible?

*** Unfortunately, RMS is traveling the world and fitting us in because he is _that_ driven.  He has written that he has a cold and needs sleep, so, I suspect there will not be a public meeting.  He has written that these events are draining for him and he needs to rest. However, while at the conference, he is determined to make the most his time here and will want to discuss intelligent questions and promote his cause, Free Software, any way he can.

So, here's a request:  Promote this speech any way you can and tell me how you suggest I/we do it better.  We want you and your colleagues, university teachers and their students and the general public that cares about individual rights to come.

As for the conference, same as the above.  If you can think of a way to "grow" the conference beyond our provincial group, we'd be thrilled and grateful.

BarCamp

You may have heard of or attended BarCamps in Bangkok (see
http://www.barcampbangkok.org ). BarCamp Bangkok 3 was held at Sripatum
University, and BarCamp  Bangkok 2 at Chulalongkorn University, so we
are already involved with  education. SPU are interested in setting up
some kind of open source  centre in Thailand.

*** Our goal (shor-term) is to establish a foundation for free and open software for education in Thailand.  We may put the focus on "sustainable" software.  I would like to discuss, and therefore improve, this idea with community members.

There is an upcoming BarCamp in Chiang Mai on November 14th organised
by some friends up there if you are interested in participating.

I do not think I will be able to get there as I have to go to Sri Lanka, but I a aware of and admire the bar camp movement.  Perhaps we could plan a bar camp style conference for FLoss in education together?

Dear Mike and Fellow Bar Campers,

Thank you for posting the announcement. I just want to say
publicly, what I wrote you: You are all welcome at both the RMS
speech and also the conference. You would broaden the discussions and
bring deeper expertise, I'm sure. So, please plan to come.

http://flossedbk.flossed.org/about (brief list of workshops)
http://flossedbk.flossed.org/workshoplist

The general public is invited to the RMS speech (RMS talks are not
technical). Title: "The Free Software Movement: Your Freedom as a
Software User"

My opinion: If you would take some time to spread the word about RMS
you would be doing a favor to us and also Thailand. Even those who
disagree with Stallman have to admit that he's sharp, raises important
issues and gets us to make more careful decisions about the software
we use. In the current confused hype of Windows 7 taking over the
world for half a month's salary at a local wage, intelligent
presentation of facts meant to help you, not hype you, are worth a
lot.

In addition to the all-important help of spreading the word/
encouraging the general public to come, we would love help with:

* Simultaneous translation equipment donation
* Translation at the conference sessions.

Any ideas?

FSF.ORG announcement: http://www.fsf.org/events/20091030bangkok

* Why we are charging for a "Free Software" event: I get this question
frequently and now realize that it's one of those "teachable moments":
did you know that you can sell Free Software, and that "Free" is about
freedom, not price?

If they're interested, you can point out that FS is not the same as
freeware or shareware.

The point is that knowledge about licensing issues is woefully thin
among techies let alone the general public. So, coming to hear RMS
will be an eye opener.

Oh, and why are we charging? Because we have to pay for travel, food
and lodging for RMS, for the people organizing the event (not me!) or
they can't afford to do so. Full stop (aka "period").

We were hoping to cover expenses by charging for admission, but so
far, this is just a distant dream.

Finally, perhaps we can add a bit of bar campism to this conference,
and then plan a real one in about 6 months? Or is that too soon?
Maybe just replace this traditional conference with that one. Next
time, we hope to convince Michael Hart, the founder of Project
Gutenberg, to come. (I think that about covers the remaining (alive)
relevant old radicals who started this whole thing, doesn't it?)

Please join us. I look forward to joining the next barcamp in
Bangkok.

Best wishes,

David Bucknell

David,

I was wondering if we needed to get tickets in advance, or can we just
turn up on Friday evening for RMS' talk and pay on the door?

You can sign up on the site or you can pay at the door.

Thanks for asking!
