Dear Friends,
As we are aware, December 17 holds special significance for bank pensioners (and pensioners across India) because it is observed every year as Pensioners’ Day, marking a historic milestone in pension rights.
This day is celebrated as Pensioners’ Day in India to commemorate the 1982 Supreme Court judgment affirming the pensioners’ rights and to honor those who fought for equal and dignified pension benefits—making it especially significant for bank pensioners and all retired government employees.
On this date in 1982, the Supreme Court of India delivered a historic judgment in the case of D.S. Nakara vs. Union of India. The Court ruled that:
Pension is not a bounty or a matter of grace, but a right for services rendered.
It struck down discriminatory pension rules that had given better benefits only to those retiring after a certain date, and affirmed equality for all pensioners.
This verdict is often referred to as the “Magna Carta of Indian pensioners” because it guaranteed dignity and justice for retired employees, including bank pensioners.
Since 1983, pensioners’ associations and organizations in India—including those of bank retirees—observe 17th December as Pensioners’ Day to:
Honour the struggle of D.S. Nakara and others who fought for pension rights.
Remember the Supreme Court’s landmark judgment.
Highlight ongoing issues facing pensioners and reaffirm their rights.
For bank pensioners, this day is especially meaningful because:
It celebrates recognition of pension as a right, not a privilege.
However, bank pensioners major demand of Updation of Pension has not yet been resolved even after decades of wait.Undue delay in legal process as well as the attitude of parties involved in negotiations make the same only as a demand in CODs for wage revisions once in five years as a ritual!
Septuagenarian,Octogenarian and even centenarian bank pensioners look forward to a day which fulfill their cherished desire!
