It was a rude shock to my friends and family in year 2001, when I opted for Special VRS to my Banking career. I was just 46 and at peak of my career as manager in a premier nationalized bank when I decided to quit. My son was studying in 8th std., daughter in 4th class and my wife was unemployed.
I had no other qualification or financial background except for 23 years meritorious service in Bank. People thought that I had made a wrong decision. It was too late by the time anybody could do any thing to prevent me from what they thought was disaster for me.
My bank generously accepted my VRS application as it did of others. The in-road of computers paved the way out for redundant staff. The bank introduced the scheme with an intention to weed out the non performers. Unfortunately many cream employees chose to seek greener pastures outside the bank.
I took VRS without any pre-plan. The job was routine and monotonous. Moreover there was fear of being transferred to distant places and family dislocation. So I took the chance. I could fall back on my pension and interest income, the financial safety net. I had no regrets. But the society was not ready to leave me alone or forgive me. For them giving up a managerial job, that too at a young was a capital crime. I got fed up answering some genuine and more sadistic queries.
The only person I thought I was answerable was my wife. She had with great expectation married a bank officer, which at that time carried some prestige and glamour. Now ladies prefer men from IT field and shun Bank people in the marriage market. I managed to convince her with the promise that I would not impose any cut in the family budget and maintain the status-quo.
Luckily I got a job locally, kept my promise and even improved our status by changing from Maruti 800 to Alto car. But the VRS legacy was not ready to leave me. I boldly took another VRS in 2008 from the second job. Luckily this time there was no eye-brow raised or any qualms in the family. Society too had accepted my liking for VRS.
Now I enjoy working from my home with the help of my old enemy and new friend- the computer. My son has now finished B Tech and daughter is doing CA (Inter) and of course my wife has started working, her long cherished dream fulfilled thanks to my double VRS. She attends her job without any worry as I' am at home to welcome her VIPs- the milkman, the vegetable vendor and of course the fellow from the gas agency. Long live VRS.
