XLR leads are very easy to make. For best effect they should be balanced which means using three wire cable rather than two. If it's balanced then screening isn't so important. I sometimes used electrical wire for this sort of thing and works Ok. The acoustics in the room are terrible anyway, so we probably can't make it worse by mucking up the wiring.
Does the mic need power? Some pull power over the XLR lead and if so the mixing desk should supply it.
I'm pretty sure that the XLR connectors are for sale at Zeer, but I'm not sure when I'll next have time to go there and look.

i though about just buy a ready made cable until we figured out where to put it. i go mbk later today, so i check out if there are music related shops.
