Hi, everyone. I hope you don't mind if I ask you for more recommendations...
Tailor:
I'm interested in getting some dress slacks made for use in the US (probably all wool). Anyone have any favorite tailors?
Airline:
I'll probably fly to Chiang Mai, and then later to Singapore. Any recommendations for airlines, especially given that I have over 25 kg baggage?
Restaurant:
I'd like to find a good restaurant (preferably an Indian restaurant) for a business dinner not far from the Nana Skytrain station, not too cheap, but not too expensive. Any ideas?
By the way, I had an interesting experience today that I've never had before. I was right outside the Nana station, and an Indian man approached me saying that today was my lucky day. ;) He was kind of a fortune teller, and tried to persuade me that he could enlighten me as to the obstacles to my happiness, and guide me to fulfillment. He started asking me personal questions, and mentioned that I would need to pay him 1000 baht, and I left him. Is this common?
Welcome back to Bangkok. We should catch up while you're in town.
As it turns out I've been trying out a few new tailors as my old one
moved and went upscale on me. Place called Joy Collection @ 35/75 Soi
Wattanawong gave me a great price and I'm supposed to go do a fitting with
it tomorrow for the suit I ordered already. They apparently have free
pickup service from your hotel so call them at 02-253-4257. I've a local
friend who introduced me so you may wanna go through her in order to get
the best price. Let me know.
Can't name the Indian restaurants down there but there are a couple of
decent ones right there. Maybe someone else can help with names. As far as
the lucky day thing - yes - scam artists are very common.
Airline-wise Tiger & Jetstar consistently have best prices to Singapore
with Air Asia being second. Of course your luggage demands make things more
interesting so try a quote from Tiger online as well as one with Thai Air.
Sometimes Thai Air has specials that will get you there cheaper. I find
Tiger the most flexible of the low-cost airlines with luggage fees and Air
Asia & Jetstar can be downright evil.

I just had a suit made at a place on 22 that came highly recommended from a good friend. It's called Larry's, about a block past washington square on the left. The owner's name is Raj, but I guess he goes by Larry. http://www.bespoketailorbangkok.com/mens-bespoke-tailor-thailand.php I went to several other recommended places first but didn't get a vibe, I was pretty impressed with these guys and the price was fair. You can tell them I referred you, it might get you a slightly better price.
For Indian food there's a Mrs. Balbirs on Soi 11 (a few blocks up from Nana on the other side). Haven't been there personally but the reviews are pretty good. http://www.mrsbalbirs.com/map k

First of all - the indian man is a scam. I've seen him around Nana a
couple of times. They're a team of 2 people. If you happen to go by
again, you'll notice TWO indians, and if you stand for a few minutes
on the side, you'll see them approach just about every "Falang" there
is. The first time it happened to me, he said there's a sort of lucky
charm on my forehead and that I've just been blessed and then the same
garbage you got.
Indian restaurant - Dosa King soi 11 for something different!
Completely vegetarian, but damn do they know how to make their dosa's.
AMAZING.
Tailors - Crown Tailors, sukhumivt soi 8. My favorite tailors on
sukhumvit and bangkok. Lovely chaps, affordable prices and excellent
customer service.
Airline - as all the above, air asia the best. You can pay a small
amount for luggage. And 8 kg as carry on. You'll be fine :)
