Hi All,

Since a year I have been cycling an Act 110+ and loving the
experience. Now wanna take up some serious biking.
Please suggest some good MTB at ~40k INR.

Thanks in advance..

You should now take up some serious researching too. You have 40k to
spend and no list of bikes you are even considering? Wow.

Anyway, in my personal opinion, these bikes should find a place in
your list - in order of preference.

1. KHS Alite 1000 (with a fork upgrade?)
2. Cannondale SL3
3. Orbea Sherpa
4. Giant Revel 0
5. Trek 4300 Disc

Regards,
Shankar

You could also look at road bikes in that range. They make you go faster.

Road bikes are MUCH slower on trails. But yeah, decide on purpose before you invest on any bike.

Thanks for getting a level deeper Shankar :)

I don't have brand preference but looking for a good 29er and not to upgrade much of the bike for next 6 months.

Hope this helps in narrowing down.

Pavan

Thanks for the suggestion Ramey.
Will consider this if I decide not to do off roads :)

Thanks for adding Merida TFS 100 to the list Yathi.

@all,
Please suggest some 29ers. I would really prefer a 29er over 26er.
Mean while most of them use Shimano Alivio dérailleur but is it the best or SRAM X4 ?

At the cost of repeating, you want to spend 40k and you have no idea what 29ers you are even remotely interested in and you want us to spoon feed you with nothing but a budget? Way to go man.

+100!

I was just reading this thread and the same thing came to mind. Pavan,
try reading up a little first and then get back us with questions.
FYI, this year, there are more 29er options floating around with some
of the SL series also being available in niner avatar. And if you're
hell bent on a twenty-niner, it should be stupidly easy to come up
with a list, being that you have such a specific need (or 'want'
rather) and budget.

On the subject of the TFS100, it is indeed a lovely mountain bike but
hasn't been available for a long time (2010 - early 2011). I know that
when I bought my Alite 1000 in June of last year, the TFS had
(tragically) disappeared from Merida's India lineup.

@Shankar: Last season's 1000 cost 36k. This season's will probably
cross 40k. Even if the OP could buy a sub-40k Alite 1000, the fork
upgrade would be imposs in that budget. Yes, we can be pleased we
bought our rides earlier :)

Do consider the maintenance & spare availability factor too! Being
unconventional, it's going to cost more(time & money) than a regular
MTB (26"). IMO, it may not be a good option for regular rides (tarmac)
unless you intend to do trails, quite often that is...

Hi Shankar,

I have my opinions but didnt want to influence other's options with my opinions. So kept the post open, looking for new options and evaluating on the go.

i agree with shankar and rahul about you just walking in the park and having no clue about what is in store for you when it comes to 29ers..
if you share your choices you dont influence people with them rather leads to a meaningful discussion wherein one narrows down his choices based on others experiences / knowledge..
and yeah.. the new stock of alite 1000 would hit 40k easily.. fork upgrade would be very difficult in tht case..
just thinking.. in case alite 2000 is in stock with venky how about going for that instead at 48k INR ??...

@Pavan : Ugh. Its not information you hold back when asking for options from 3000 other people man. Common courtesy dictates you give more information and seek opinions, not throw a question at people and evaluate what they'll come up with.

@Rahul, alphazed : >40k for alite 1000 eh? Wow. I thought even the newer Alite 1000 models are around 35k (and hence the fork upgrade suggestion). We were indeed lucky to get such awesome bikes at great

Pavan,

You may add the German engineered 'Bergamont' Vitox 7.2 or 8.2 to your
list....

Pavan Kondapuram <pava...@yahoo.co.in> May 25 02:50PM -0700

Hi Guys,

1st thing I'm going with a 26er and not 29er :) due to reasons
like availability of spares, expensive, heavy, pick-up burnouts...

After those hard discussions and more dig-ins, I have arrived at few
bikes,
1 being most likely

1. KHS Alite 1000
2. Kelly's Viper 6
3. Merida Matts 100 D
4. Giant Revel 0 disc
5. Cannondale Trail SL 4
6. Trek 4300 disc

Please let me know your preferences and reasons.

Thanks in advance.

I really liked the Bergamont when I last saw it at BOTS. Please do check
if the older stock is available as it might be much cheaper the new
stock the cutoms plus the dollar price!

I ride a Merida TFS 400D - It is an awesome bike - I fall in love with
it every now and then! :)) I wish the higher end bikes continue to be
brought in Merida - very good framing.

I think a trek 6000 might fit in this range also though I m not sure. Do
check...

Hi Pavan,

I was using hero octane recra before. Tested 26ers and 29ers, without any doubt my mind and heart said 29er.

I am using Cannodale Trial SL5 29er . The performance of it is really great. Cost of it is 39K grand.

When I cycle none my friends catch up the my avg speed/top speed. Suggest you would go for 29er.

Even the Firefox Gary Fisher's wahoo and marlin-d are good 29ers gives great performances, but the graphics design and finishing of cannondale is unbeatable.

Regards,
Santosh
