01. World of Sports as Complex System: Networks of Athlete
A research in Dept. Computational Sociology has proposed an
alternative way to observe and extract the multiple matches games of
sports that could be implemented in games of sports with multiple
matches, i.e.: badmintons, tennis, basket ball, football. However,
games of sports in which a group of player meets with other group is
still on the discourse for more modeling analysis. Two papers have
been published as BFI Working Paper Series, with empirical data of
badminton tournaments and the world tennis professional tournaments.
In the first paper the Athlete Historical Relative Performance Index
(HRPI) was introduced. The paper proposes the index in order to
quantitatively extract information in the scores hit in the sets of
head-to-head game in badminton tournaments. The index is treated as
the weights of the directed networks built between competing athletes.
The paper also proposes the way to build the fully connected network
based on the empirically found network in order to have relative index
between athletes that have never nor will be met in series of games.
Some further directions as well as implementation to small amount of
data is described for advanced analysis.
By using the index introduced in the first paper, the second paper
interestingly discussed the possibility of measurable distance of
performance, for example, between Martina Hingis and Lindsay
Davenport, both a very well-known world-class tennis player. The
method incorporated in this research paper is the HRPI and its
representation as graph/network. The finding of the small world
topology is elaborated along with further statistical patterns in the
fashion of the weighted and directed network. The explanation of the
sport tournament system as a highly optimized system is hypothetically
proposed. Finally, some elaborations regarding to further directions
of the usability of the proposed methodology is discussed.
Both papers are written in English, and interested readers may

02. Cartograms of Indonesia: Indonesia as you've never seen it before
Cartograms are data geo-visualization. But we should not be confused
the term with the well known and popular Geographic Information System
(GIS) since there are still a lot of debates within these two terms.
However, we should not be in polemics regarding to definitive terms
while there are things that we can exploit from both. Cartograms are
often related to cartography, and cartograms has a great potentials to
be incorporated for harnessing the nature of social complex system.
This is showed in Dept. Computational Sociology by launching the web-
site of "Kartografi Indonesia" containing a lot of cartograms from
abundant of Indonesian data, from demographic analysis to economic and
social data, from the literacy index to the AIDS epidemics in
Indonesia and it is still rapidly updated until now. The website can
be accessed in
URL: http://compsoc.bandungfe.net/kartografi-indonesia/
The website is designed in Indonesian but since the nature of
cartograms are images, it might be no problem for those who does not
understand Indonesian. However, you might want to read the Frequently
Asked Questions available in the website before jumping to the forest
of the interesting maps. Technically speaking, there are some
methodologies used to build the cartograms, and some of them are the
one proposed by Gastner & Newman (2004) and another technique is by
using the self-organizing map algorithm of neural networks.
An Indonesian paper has been written for interested Indonesian readers
depicting some interesting features of Indonesian political
circumstances (based on the result of Indonesian General Election
2004) along with some discussions about complex system
representations. The paper can be downloaded as follows.

There are also some downloadable poster related to some data
presentations in the website in the URL:

Since a lot of data is being processed even now, the website is in the
state of on-going updating. You might want to look at the website
after some days for more interesting cartograms and posters.
03. Available now: Printable poster for Computational Sociology
BFI new scholar, Ardian Maulana is now in his intership in the
department and one of his first interesting work is on making the
poster resume about the use of Computational Sociology in Social
Analysis and Theoretical Explorations. You might want to download the
poster and print for yourself for free. The poster is in portable
document format (PDF) and quite big size for its high-resolution
contents (approx. 10Mbytes). Download for the Computational Sociology
poster, here:

You are also invited to see some recent updates in the department.

04. The new issue of the Journal of Social Complexity is coming ahead
The publication of the next issue of the regular Journal of Social
Complexity is on the road right now. Papers from authors are being
reviewed with management conducted by Deni Khanafiah as the Editor in
Chief right now. We will keep you informed with any recent updates
regarding to this reviewing process in the next issues of the
Newsletter.
05. Book Available: Indonesian Introduction to Econophysics
A book written by BFI scholars to introduce econophysics for
Indonesian readers has been published in the last year and it has been
circulated in national major book stores. However, we have heard some
difficulties to obtain the book. The book is now available by ordering
the book directly to BFI administrative office in Bandung or Surya
Research International office in Jakarta.
