01. Ribbon of Love

...that love and pride and honesty,
were to be gained at too high a cost...
"Thirty Summers" - Cowboy Junkies

As quoted above, an artist may view love as something that is too high
a cost. Another artist may thought love as truly unexplainable concept
rising in our human civilization. In the other hand, some scientists
discuss about the chemistry of love, that love can be explained
psychologically from the rising of particular chemicals among our
neural peripheries. Sociobiologist talked on love as a psychological
mechanisms sustained in our sexual selections. Evolutionary
psychologists discuss how "love" shaped our civilisations. A javanese
housewife says love is something to do with "bibit, bobot, bebet", the
personal qualities of mates in human courtship. Love is something to
do with micro-properties of human agent. Love is something to do with
sexual selection, a thing that is so much regarded to intra-species
evolution - a thing that as we talk about human culture and
civilisation shaping human preferences on things while in return
emerging social phenomena as it concerned the discourse of human
population.

The dynamics of human sexual selection is usually related to
sociobiology and rarely are discussed in the sociological theories.
This is probably because sociobiology frequently leans on the
evolutionary theories while in other place, sociologist are probably
too busy revealing the "ideology" of the theory of evolution and
hardly grasping the importance of biology in human behavior.
Nevertheless, sociological endeavors to social life widely accept that
individual's behavior must be a kind of product of complex
interactions among biological predispositions and the total physical
and social environment.

There have been advanced works for the inquiries to human sexuality
and social phenomena, e.g.: social constructionism and postmodernism
theories. The work of sociology relating to human sexuality is
frequently laid on the observations and political advocacy to
feminism, homosexual emancipation, etc., while in the other hand,
many human preferences can be regarded in the sense of dimorphism of
sexual differences between male and female shaping the macro-
properties of our daily society. However, sexual selection theory did
not born in sociology but a sort of theory complimentary to the
natural selection theory of Charles Darwin (1871). Thus, admittedly
sociological work reading the social phenomena in the notions of
sexual dimorphisms and the mechanisms of sexual selection in human
societies would in one case to be one the door to the evolutionary
social theories.

Furthermore, the work on computational sociology has also some notions
on evolutionary thoughts regarding to the way idea living and
replicating in society as reflected in preference to artifacts and
cultural aspects of the society known as memetics. Here, the
evolutionary theory terminologies are used to establish computational
model for certain cultural aspects in the sense of recent Darwinian
evolutionary theory of selfish gene as the term 'meme' (later defined
to be the smallest element of information) by biologist, Richard
Dawkins (1976). However, as later discussed in the last section of the
paper, remarks founded on our observations of sexual selection in the
terms of sociobiology meets the memetics should both establish a
possible new adventure to the realm of the development to new
sociological thinking on human culture and social living.

Yet, talking about love and the qualities of mate in sexual selection
would always remain things that are naturally fuzzy, even to social
actors being in love. There is no way to measure how a person loves
another person while none can reflect the romance someone is feeling
into crisp boundaries. This is the background of the works which is
presenting an innovation of agent based modeling and the construction
of artificial societies by incorporating fuzzy set theory while trying
to understand evolutionary social phenomena of sexual selection, love,
and romance as conducted in the Dept. Computational Sociology
recently.

Interested readers may want to view two papers regarding to this:

Computational Experiments with the Fuzzy Love and Romance
Working Paper WPH2007

The first paper brings two motivations to the theoretical explorations
of social analysis. The first is to enrich the agent based
computational sociology by incorporating the fuzzy set theory in to
the computational modeling. This is conducted by showing the
importance to include the fuzziness into artificial agent's
considerations and her way acquiring and articulate information. This
is continued with the second motives to bring the Darwinian sexual
selection theory - as it has been developed broadly in evolutionary
psychology - into the analysis of social system including cultural
analysis and other broad aspects of sociological fields. The two was
combined in one computational model construction showing the fuzziness
of mating choice, and how to have computational tools to explain broad
fields of social realms. The paper ends with some opened further
computer program development.

In advance, the second paper reports some experiments on the issue of
human mating games and sexual preferences in the perspective of
population and some macro-social realms. The notions of love, romance,
fidelity, and sexual attractiveness are those comprising the theory to
human intra-species evolution but yet still rare to be employed to
understand human social, economic, and cultural studies in terms of
sociology or economics. The paper did experiments on those issues, on
the possible relation between population growth, power-law
distribution of wealth, and some other relevant points to our
realization of evolutionary theory of sexual selection. The paper
expects to open an alternative bridge of our advancement in human
evolution and the complexity of the social system.

02. The Stockmarket Watchdog
The most recent research with the case of study in Jakarta Stock
Exchange is on evaluating the possible further understandings on the
watch dog mechanisms in the stock market for the sake of the fairness
among investors and traders. The watchdog mechanisms relied upon the
thorough observations of the price fluctuations and the trading
volume. The implementation of the watchdogging is however the
confirmation to the respective trader or firm and at the highest
stake: the suspension of the trading on particular stock. A working
paper has been published to summarizing this issue. The paper
elaborates some mechanisms of the watchdogging and statistically
proposing possible comprehensive way concerning the notions of
abnormal returns and price fluctuations. Interested readers may
download the paper in BFI working paper list in the website; however,
the paper is written in Indonesian only.

03. Book Available: Indonesian Introduction to Econophysics
A book written by BFI scholars to introduce econophysics for
Indonesian readers has been published in the last year and it has been
circulated in national major book stores. However, we have heard some
difficulties to buy the book. The book is now available by ordering
the book directly to BFI administrative office in Bandung or Surya
Research International office in Jakarta.
