It looks like DARPA gave a $500K (over two years) grant to start the "Hackerspaces Global Space Program". In brief, people working in hackerspaces will be able to apply for $3-$10K grants to make something related to space. Some examples in the RFP were: a small solar sail craft, a method to deal with orbital debris and a way to test microgravity.

Sounds awesome even if Mitch Altman is not too hot on the idea.
