At the last meeting I started explaining monads and basics of Haskell syntax. The plan for this meeting is to continue talking about monads and hopefully start with monad transformers. I strongly suggest reading the monads explanation in the “Real World Haskell” book (available online, see the link below), especially to those who are new to the concept. The explanation there is exteremely concise. Please also take a look at the “All about monads” tutorial and its examples, we can go over them at the meeting if there are any questions.

Some old and new suggested reading texts:

• Excellent monads and monad transformers explanation in the “Real World Haskell” book, for those who are struggling with the concepts. The suggested reading order: ch.10, ch.14, ch.15, ch.18, plus ch.16 for an introduction to parsing monads. Also read the first chapters, if you need an introduction to Haskell.
• “All about monads” tutorial
• “Monads for functional programming” by Philip Wadler. A bit long, but covers some most often used examples of monads and their use.
• Dan Piponi's collection of links to his blog posts about monoids, monads, etc.: “A Partial Ordering of some Category Theory applied to Haskell”
• Martin Grabmüller's “Monad Transformers Step by Step” (PDF preview, PDF).
  
• “LogicT — backtracking monad transformer with fair operations and pruning” (PDF preview, PDF) by Oleg Kiselyov, Chung-chieh Shan, Daniel P. Friedman, and Amr Sabry. Rather advanced, however the idea can be followed easily due to good examples.
  
• Dan Piponi's blog post “Grok Haskell Monad Transformers”

Some people will be going from the South Bay (and probably East Bay) to the meeting and back, so there's a possibility of carpooling. In The Monad.Reader (TMR) Issue 13, there's an article called Typeclassopedia:

I've found it to be an excellent resource for gaining a better
understanding of Haskell's type classes, including monads and
transformers. (Having not read most of the other texts cited, I can't
say how it compares.)
