Even though there are three crores of Gods in Hinduism, Lord Ganesha is given the greatest importance. Vaishnavas,shaivas, Brahmins, saktheyulu – no matter which God is worshipped primarily by them, when it comes to special occasions like marriage, upanayanam, and before doing daily Pooja, every one worships Lord Ganesha to overcome obstacles. It is essential to think why so much importance is given to Him in the Hindu society. It is easy to conclude it as a
blind belief. Any belief that is present for several thousands of years attracting millions of people, indicates that some where in the depth of their hearts there is strong belief of its usefulness. To analyze about that usefulness is wisdom. To discard everything as blind belief is the modern superstition.
After living several years on this earth, human beings understood that the progress of any individual, country, is linked with remaining part of the nature. He understood that it is essential to consume only the necessary things from the nature and it is important to respect and not to cause distress the other living beings, including plant kingdom. On one hand with
advancement of the culture and civilization this idea lead to the formation of principle of non-violence. On the other hand, Human beings recognized that it is important to respect the remaining part of nature including rivers, mountains which provide support to us and to the rest of living creatures. He recognized that the nature is responsible for providing day to day necessities, for our happiness, bliss, to all the living creatures. To sincerely express that thought is worshipping the nature. Human has the vision of the creative power in all the living and nonliving objects in the nature and he worshipped it.
This point of view is comprised in the worship of Ganesha. Lord Ganesha is the symbolization of all the animals starting from the biggest animal - Elephant to the smallest animal –rat that moves in the houses. The fact that human being is also an inseparable, integral part of the nature is indicated by the human form in Lord Ganesha ‘s figure . This group of the fauna is supported by the flora. So we worship Him with different types of leaves (PATRI). Earth is the main support for all types living creatures. So
for the worship of Ganesha , the main thing is idol of Ganesha made with clay.If water is not present on this Earth then neither the plants nor the animals would not have evolved and survived. The bodies of all living beings are formed by absorbing the essence from the Earth through water. To remember this, after the pooja, the clay idol of Ganesha, the flowers, and leaves are submerged in sacred rivers, temple tanks (koneru). Wells are also used for the same purpose, when it is not possible to do it in the rivers.

Q: Some people are writing chain letters as part of Sai Pracharam. In those letters they are writing to send a similar letter to 20 people which will give them lot of benefit and if they fail to do so it will cause lot of troubles. Is Baba delighted with this type of Pracharam? Please give suitable clarification through our magazine to these brothers.
A: There are two chains that keep all the living beings tied to earth and hell in such a way that they don’t get liberation—one is desire (or wish), the other is fear. Both these support each other. Fear about future is the cause for desire. As desires increase, the fear that they will not be fulfilled increases too. If we think one as eczema the other one is scratching it. Scratching increases the eczema and itching but will not reduce it. As it increases in size scratching also increases. It becomes impossible not to scratch it. The Kabandha who stands on these two feet and devours us is SELFISHNESS. EGO and JEALOUSY are his sharp protruding teeth.
AFFECTION and HATRED are his two eyes. The wisdom to nip these off as buds is taught by Spirituality, virtue and morality.These are present firmly in the human hearts right from the beginning and try to conquer us when we start the spiritual practice. Till we attain self realization these will follow us. They ruined the penance of Viswamitra several times. Marudu – the ego, the combined form of these two, tried to lure and threaten Buddha several times when he started his penance.
When Lord Jesus did severe penance for 40 days in a desert, a deity appeared and said that he will give the entire treasury on this earth if Jesus listens to him. Immediately Jesus understood who it was! And said “Saitan Go away! I will
not surrender to you. I don’t want them .The first couple Adam and Eve surrendered to the lure of Saitan; they lost their purity, divinity, and divine Love and became victims of death, disease, and sins. For generations, being their descendants, even today they are chasing us too. This saitan tried to entice the Mohammad prawakta in the same way. But that prophet warned human beings about him. Being born as human beings is the result of the punyam in previous births, and due to lot of punyam one would become a spiritual seeker, and even lot of punyam will give the opportunity to do Sadguru Seva. Sri Sai also warned “This opportunity will never come!” that means he said to beware of this fear and desire. Basing on the previous life virtuous deeds, we obtained the devotion on Sri Sai. To destroy it this Kali or this Saitan in the recent past are coming in another beautiful disguise .
That is nothing but the chain letters which is causing lot of distress and headache to the devotees.Recently, several devotees are getting letters in the post. On these either Sri Sai Namam or some other God’s name will be written. It says —“Write 20 copies of this chain letter and send it to 20 people. People who has done like this got monetary benefit or some other form of benefit. For those who threw this letter in waste basket it resulted in lot of troubles.” Innocent devotees are scared of these types of letters. So it is important to explain about these letters.People who write these
letters don’t sign them. This is the first evidence to say that these are like fake money. The letter is not signed as they know that they will be convicted for scaring the people like this. That proves the truthfulness of these letters. Even proper postage is not paid for these letters, which proves right at the beginning that these letters are unnecessary expense. Then the question is what benefit do they achieve in writing these letters in Sri Sai‘s name or any other God’s name.People who write these letters are Stupid and ignorant. These types of people are present in any religion. People who write these letters are beasts in human form and they force their beliefs on others. In world History, these types of people, after obtaining power and strength tortured and killed other people for not following the religion they liked. They have destroyed great civilizations.
Lack of such opportunity make these ignorant people to cause distress to devotees through these chain letters. There is no need for God, Sri Sai or other Mahatmas to attract everyone with these types of wishes or through bribe .They don’t have the necessity to attract people by causing terror. -- Are they political leaders to survive on our material and moral support – to create hopes or to fright us? -- They are noble minded. They merciful beings to protect and provide food, water, light, air not only to virtuous beings but also to wicked persons, people who don’t even think about them. God ,Rishis from Vedic age; Incarnations like LordRama ,Lord Sri Krishna; Satya Drastas like Buddha,Jain ; Acharyas like Sri Sankara and Ramanujacharya; Sadgurus like Sri Sai ,Sri Rama Krishna Paramahamasa; - have never descended to such an evil method. It is very mean to propagate Sri Sai’s namam who is Abahya swarupa, (provider of freedom from fear) through the most evil methods like fright and hope.
So what should we do with these letters? Don’t do anything. Pray Sri Sai to protect these ignorant people from their ignorance and consign these chain letters to waste paper basket. If you think that the namam is sacred no matter who wrote it, then keep that letter in front of Sri Sai, and pray “Sai you
are omnipresent. By keeping this letter in front of you, your namam will be given to all living beings. Please give vivekam to these ignorant people.” Next day remove it with Pooja nirmalyam. Give them to Mandiram so that it can be used to pack vibuthi.

SRI SHIRDI SAI BABA –THE SPIRITUAL FRUIT OF GREAT TREE OF MAN KIND.

At a time when our society is enveloped in darkness, fraught with religious strife, religious conversations and caste wars, the light of victory, though yet flickering gives us hope in the form of the holy day of Vijayadasami. The reason –it is the day on which the Kohinoor among the saints Sri Shirdi Sai Baba attained Samadhi.
Every year devotees celebrate this auspicious day, recall their experiences with Baba and nourish the seeds of true humanity which he planted in their hearts.
Sri Shirdi Sai Baba first appeared in the year 1954 as a boy of 16 years seated under a neem (Margo) tree in the outskirts of the village of Shirdi in Ahmednagar district of Maharastra. No one knows his original name, time, place of birth, his religion and caste, not even of his parents.He never revealed the same to anybody. Whenever anyone asked, he would put them off with a smile. He was always seen meditating under the tree day and night unmindful of heat or cold, uttering the words “Allah Mallik” meaning GOD IS SUPREME and begging food from five houses a day. When devotees bowed to him he blessed them saying “Allah Acha Karega”meaning “God bless you” which would provide them godly protection. Sometimes he would remain quiet or say “Allah has not permitted me.”
Once when there were heavy rains at Shirdi, on persuasion of devotees, He started living in the old dilapidated mosque in the village. He named it as “Dwarakamayi.” In the eastern side of the mosque he installed the “Dhuni- the sacred fire,” burning day and night, planted tulasi (Ficus Religiosa-- Ocimum) plant—a plant very holy to Hindus in front of the mosque and he sat to the north of the mosque. Thus for sixty years, Sri Sai carried out the mission of his divine manifestation. When traditional Muslims came he would quote Arabic sentences from the Quran and lead them along the spiritual path in accordance to their religious beliefs. He encountered them to celebrate the traditional festivals like Ramadan, Moharam, etc. When they brought (Naivedya) sacred offering of the food, he would read “Fatiha”. Sometimes He would go to the ‘Takia’ (the resting place of Muslim visitors to the village) at nights and with the bells tied around
his ankles, along with the fakirs he used to dance and sing devotional songs in Arabic and Persian languages as well as the songs composed by great saints like Kabir.He used to refer HIMSELF as poor fakir and a slave to Allah.
He enlightened his Muslim devotees Abdullah, Bade Baba, Abba Seth, Imambhai, as per the Islamic tradition. Well known saints of the time like Hazrat Tajuddin Baba, Darvesh Shah, Banne Mia, and Shamsuddin recognized Sri Sai Baba as a great Aulia and sent their devotees for his darshan (paying respects personally and worshipfully.)
If for the above reasons ,we take Sri Shirdi Sai Baba to be a Muslim, He not only encouraged His Hindu Devotees to celebrate Sri Ramanavami (the annual festival of Sri Rama’s Birth) Gurupurnima (the full moon day which occurs in July ,considered holy to all spiritual aspirants for worshipping their respective Gurus),DattaJayanthi (the annual festival of Lord Dattatreya ‘s birth) but also made them read Hindu Scriptures like Vedanta panchadasi,Bhagavadgita, Bhagavatham etc., He appeared to them in the form of Hindu Gods like Rama,Maruthi ,Dattatreya,Ganapathi, Vittal etc.,and thus proved that HE is one with all GODS. Like a true mendicant he took care of the sacred fire and lived by begging food from five houses.
He put down the pride of a learning of a devotee by extending corrective interpretation of critical sloka from the Bhagavadgita, the interpretation was so unique which is not given by any scholar so far. He showed that He is one with both Hindu and Muslim saints. HE showed that any living being when abused or honored reached Him directly. He demonstrated his identity even with inanimate idols and photographs of Gods and Saints. His omnipresent and omniscient consciousness was always aware of what was happening to His devotees at all times and at all places. That is why Hindu devotees regarded Him as manifestation of Lord Dattatreya and the KOHINOOR among THE SAINTS. He also blessed several Christian, Parsee, Jain devotees with divine experiences and spiritual upliftment. Indeed, Sri Sai seems to be that spiritual fruit of great tree of mankind sought by monarchs as Akbar and great saints like Kabir who strived for the harmony of all
religions. It is Sai Baba the Supreme Being, who not only preached but also practically proved that atma or self is all pervading and it is our duty to have mercy towards living beings and to preserve religious harmony.
In spite of being worshipped by his devotees he continued to lead a life like fakir only. In sixty years, not even once did he permit his devotees to take him out in ceremonial processions. Distributing the day’s collections which he received as dakshina (a token offering of money to symbol, a symbol of one’s loving faith in him) from his devotees, amounting to about Rs/-400 to Rs/-500 everyday to the poor before sunset and sustaining Himself on alms, Sri Sai is a dispassion incarnate.
Millionaires, beggars and mute creatures –all had equal access to His Durbar (Royal Court) all the time, without any middle men. He detested the very display of occult powers .the above mentioned miracles which expound the path of Dharma or righteousness occurred spontaneously with His intervention. He shunned the miracles which merely dazzle the devotee into submitting to the performer’s supremacy as akin to dalliance with a prostitute.
In this way, having lived at Shirdi for over sixty years in October 1918 on the holy day of Vijayadasami at about 2.30 Pm Sri Sai left his mortal body. As promised by Him even today He is protecting His devotees by appearing before them either physically or in their dreams. Even today devotees of all religions continue to celebrate all religious festival just as they did while Baba was in physical form, exhibiting communal harmony.
A diligent study of the life history of such saint is very essential to the society today.
It is a perfect means to wipe out feelings of communal disharmony and distorted casteism from the very minds of people. When doubts arise regarding the ancient scriptures on Dharma (righteousness),the life and teachings of great saints serve as a guidance in our day to day living and in case of any contradiction between the above two, the words of Sadguru(perfectly enlightened one ) shall only prevail. Had the ritualists followed this path, most of the problems faced by the society today would not have evolved at all. Over a period of time, though this fact was forgotten, time being the divine manifestation is making the priests and heads of various religious clergy to change their attitude and recognize the real dharma. The path of dharma expounded by Sri SAI, embodied in the words of great poet Khaleel Gibran “what my heart alone speaks today shall be spoken by thousands of hearts tomorrow” is being echoed from all
directions.
