December 28 is the 100th anniversary of the San Francisco Municipal Railway,
the first publicly owned transit system in a major U.S. city. Oh, the fire
and brimstone that were flung at SF in those days, when the NY Times was
convinced that SF was going to hell because of embracing socialist ideals.
This socialism also led to municipal water and power.

Anyhow, the Muni (always styled as "the Muni") is giving free rides all day
on Friday the 28th, making it a good chance to ride the cable cars, etc.

I have a question about the cable cars.

Am I required to get off at the end of the line or am I allowed to ride it
back to the other end?

I took advantage of the free MUNI rides to go to The Walt Disney Museum. I
took 38 to Geary & Presidio from Transbay Terminal then transferred to 43
for the rest of the way. The buses weren't crowded in the morning but the
afternoon ride back was terrible.

The 38 Line was packed to the gill and one gentleman said that he waited 32
minutes! (They often have two buses back-to-back in this route.) At some
stops the driver had to tell people to get off so the doors could close. I
don't know whether MUNI reduced the schedule on purpose but it was not worth
getting packed like sardine. It'd have been a perfect opportunity for
pickpockets to practice their skills.

I also decided not to check out the cable cars because chances are that
there'll be a long line.

If MUNI intended to let people check out their services, they failed quite
miserably.

You can ride as far as you want as long as it's before the expiration time
on your transfer/receipt.

It is "Muni" not "MUNI". And they gave the free rides to celebrate their
100th anniversary.
