I might have to move from SF to LA. Can you recommend a moving
company? I have the average amount of furniture etc for a one-bedroom
apartment.

Also what is the going rate these days for movers?

Thanks!

One option you might want to try is one of those curbside "load it yourself"
containers. You order the thing, hire some local folks to load your stuff
into it, have it shipped, then hire some folks on the other end to unload it.
This is far cheaper than hiring movers for a 400 mile move.

Some friends of mine did this a few months ago and it worked out well for
them. It's just that I'm wary of movers, having heard far too many stories
about overcharges and furniture held hostage.

I haven't moved in 20 years and back then it was $70 per hour.

My wife and I used Camel Moving, and she had used it the last time she
moved herself as well:

http://www.camelmoving.com/

They will come to you house and give you an estimate of the maximum in
will cost to move you. When my wife moved the first time she actually
got billed less then the estimate.

They were very careful with the furniture and fragile items. Though I
would suggest packing your good clothes (suits, formal dresses, etc) as
they just pack them in without any special care. Other then that I have
no complaints at all, very friendly and polite.

Uh, what part of "hire some local folks" didn't you understand?

Bay Area Consumer Checkbook does -- but do the movers they cover go
all the way to LA? I always go to my pubalic liberry to read the BACC,
by the way.

http://www.checkbook.org/sitemap/San_Francisco/Ratings_And_Articles/Movers/default.cfm?

The California Public Utility Commission regulates intrastate movers
-- you ccan post a complaint at their website, but they don't post any
information by company. I would try calling for information about
complaints.

True that. It's usually just a one way migration.
